Kikinho goes Colombiano....

Amazon Rainforest Adventure Day 2

... area around the lake. Once we'd got to the mouth of the canal, the motor was stashed in some trees, and it was all paddling and hacking with a machete from there!

Without the motor, you got a real sense of how peaceful and quite the jungle is during the day compared to when it comes alive at night. The gentle paddling also allowed us to see some more species of bird, and Ceciliano to show us how the locals go about catching their fish. He set up a ...

... and me next to some guys who´d apparently finished work and drank rum constantly. Sadly they were less generous.
We spent lots of time waching the banks change, huge tropical storms daily and the others on the boat argue, shout and sing a lot. On the third day we spent the entire day in a port unloading another whole ship in parts to be built there.
The next morning while I was boiling water, I was physically threatened (via Kate) by one of my neighbours with enormous ...

Amazon

It's been a while since I last wrote, and plenty has happened!! After Fortaleza(which ended up not being so bad because we ate an entire plate of excellent prawns fried in olive oil and garlic, and drank mango juice) we flew on to Santarém in the Amazon. Spent 3 nights there waiting for our boat ride to Manaus. Was a quiet city, with not a whole lot to see, but a nice river and a cute little town which apparently in the dry season has a ...

The Life in a Hammock

... under them. Then we were taken to this touristy place where we could by coconot juice - which had nothing to do with the amazing coconut milk you can get in as an example Thailand - no. This one was transparent with an odd taste. If I hadn't seen the coconut chopped right in front of my eyes, I would have thought they emptied it and filled it up with water! There was also a local sloth - used as a pet and a business for the people there - hold a slot and pay for your ...

Amazon Adventure Part 3 - Hammock Sloth

... ages after boarding boat number 1 at this dodgy little port to take off for our mid river crossing. After 3 hours of wishing we were hanging in our cosy hammocks, we took off and ended up just boarding our boat while it was still moored. There was a frantic rush of people running to hang their hammocks and we just sat back smugly with all our gear already in place. All day every day we attempted to crawl out of bed for breakfast. This boat was the deluxe and ...

Amazon Adventure Part 2

... about 10 years older, so maybe that´s why. They had so much baggage it was unbelievable. Unfortunately for me the girls were both sick and spewed their guts up. Once at the dinner table, then under my hammock while I was sitting on my backpack, splashing my feet in the process. I started to worry that I would leave the boat with a vomit covered backpack. Mealtimes was always interesting. Unlike the first boat, this one had a ...

... in a hammock was interesting. I was glad that I bought a pillow in Belém as it came in handy in finding a comfy spot for my head while bent like a banana. I finally fell asleep, although waking up a few times during the night and settling back down. As there was so little space I was resting against Timo and Shonny and was glad that my hammock was strung up high as they were a bit lower than me and I didn´t have their feet in my face! The other nights improved ...

AMAZON - FISH TALES

... boat. It was curved like a whale's belly, lazy like a Mississippi troller that Mark Twain might've ridden. Moving Brazilians, other foreign travellers, and I lived for five nights and six days on the second deck. There were SEVENTY of us, packed like sardines, sleeping like bananas in our jungle of hammocks hung practically on top of one another. Five-star luxury all the way. You know what word I like? "Schooner." These trips are usually great. In 2001, I ...
