Monday was our last day in Japan. We were flying out till later that evening so we had the morning in town then caught the bus and shinkansen back to Tokyo. We dropped our bags off at Tokyo station and walked around Ueno and Ginza before we caught the Narita express out to the airport and onto our flight home. ... for some quiet time and an onsen so Leigh and I took them up to the town heated swimming pool (open air). It was a great to rest our weary ski bones in the warm natural spring waters.

So that was our skiing for this year at Nozawa Onsen - we had lovely spring conditions (no ice), warmer than we expected, but it was also lovely to have some fresh snow too (in April). The kids improved their skiing and we are looking forward to coming back in January 2016!

... walkway. This is the main method of reaching the bedrooms when the property is full. Sound travels through the whole building without issue, including the creaking of this old structure. Some walls are made of cob (a straw and mud mixture), which hold up well. A great modern convenience is the inclusion of sliding wooden framed glass doors, to keep the wooden corridors from the elements. ... yummy looking snacks so on the way down had to buy some to try. First was a giant rice cracker with black sesame, very nice. Next were some steamed buns, similar to Chinese style but a bit flatter. I had a red bean paste one and an eggplant and Scott had a red bean paste and a vegetable. They were delicious. Further down the road we got a whiff of a yummy smelling smell and found a bakery and had to try an apple pie. Lost ...

Well today I managed to tick another big ticket off my wildlife list. The Japanese Macaques or Snow Monkeys. Marina made us a delicious traditional breakfast of rice balls stuffed with seaweed and local plums plus a bowl of miso soup and some pickled vegetables and grasshopper. Yes you heard correct grasshopper! They are quite nice really in a exoskeletal kind of way. We had to get the Snow Monkey Express up to Yudanaka to then get a ...
