More chopsticks and spoons and a few sorubobo dolls. Grandmothers used to make these dolls for their grandchildren as a good luck charm to ward off evil. The traditional colour was red but now they come in gold, yellow, blue, green and orange as well. In all the previous visits, I ...

Today I decided to have a little bit of a lie in, because of how quiet the hostel room was, instead of the norm of being woken up at 6.30 by people getting ready to leave for the day! Once up and out I headed for Nagano's only real tourist attraction (known more as a winter skiing destination) Zenko-ji shrine. Since it closed at 4.30pm and we only had 15 minutes left, it wasn't worth going in. We could walk around the outer sanctum till about 6.30pm.

We left at 4.30pm and dawdled our way back to the hotel. We stopped by ...

We caught the train to Matsumoto and then changed to go to Nagano. All this was on the local train and not the Shinkansen. By the time we reached the hotel, it was 8.15pm. We couldn't be bothered with dinner by that point and basically did the laundry and went to bed.

The next morning, we are due to go back to Matsumoto again to see the castle there.
