... The Japanese are absolutely lovely, cannot say enough about how welcoming and helpful they are. We grazed on local specialties including our new addiction the Oyari bun and of course had to have chestnut ice cream though it was pretty mild in flavour. Rod went on a mountain bike ride while I tried a variety of teas, one of which was quite awful (seaweed I think), and the other was dried Sakura flower which is cherry blossom, but not to ...

It was very hot, could only put legs in, Philip squirted cold water on us to help . Went for dinner , then back to the ryokan. Tatami and futons, tiny rice filled pillows. Best things today - the snow ...

    ... decorated.
Dinner tonight is in their French restaurant. We are welcomed by an English speaking waiter from Sri Lanka. Knowing he would have English speaking guests, he had kindly translated tonight's menu into English and printed it out for us. The food is surprisingly delicious and beautifully plated, you don't quite expect a French chef in a family type resort in Kusatsu. As it turns out the chef had worked at the embassy in Italy which explains it ...
