... impossible! For some reason this place has barely any restaurants and any we did see were so expensive. In desperation we split up to check out different streets. In one area I found loads of izakayas but all in Japanese so I couldn't read prices. We found a small convenience store and decided to just get a ready meal to take back to the hostel. What a mistake! Mine was completely tasteless and had an egg which was like plastic. I had to eat it though as I was ...

Day 13 - rest day and some blogging

... lunch.

Oh yes, so back to the search for "Comfortable Shoes." As it turns out size 28 is the largest size most Japanese stores carrry. This roughly translates to 28cm or size 11. As I wear size 12 which would be 30.5cm here, we haven't yet found anything that will fit. Once again while there is plenty of water to surf on in this region the WindGuru ...

... enjoyed a vegetarian meal (seemingly all health foods) cooked by is in a similar manner to Shabu Shabu. The real treat came at the end of the meal when the waitress announced something in Japanese and started beating a drum. From behind us came a man(?) dressed in a kind of cloak with mask on of a smiling Japanese man and he proceeded to rub his hammer (not a euphemism!) on certain parts of guests' bodies. Our interpretation of this is that it's ...

Day 20: (Fukuyama) Ikuchi-jima

... e else (definitely no westerners!), beautifully painted buildings which you could get really close to and even go inside. And we were pottering around the gardens when James saw a lantern-lit cave lined with buddhas and we ventured inside - deeper and deeper, past scenes from hell (terrifying, we both started frantically repenting our sins) until we got to the Enlightenment of Buddhas, with a waterfall and votive tablets ...
