... and by the time we crossed the border we were at 7100 ft. At the Idaho border crossing there was a Visitors Center where we met a group of bikers heading north from Colorado. There was also a poster showing the Salmon River Scenic Highway, and that's what we were planning to follow.

... They were hatching the eggs and growing these very small fish... Steelhead Salmon. They produced about 1.5 million a year. Great place to stop. ... ski gondala station, which signalled the end of the hike up the hill, was the most enjoyed vista of the day.

The fact we saved $40 by walking up the trail ($20 per person uphill, downhill free), was surprisingly little comfort in mitigating our mood....too soon.

After the 3 hour hike we bounced back to the car and went to find some Hemingway moments. The monument just outside of town was quaint, his crave site was alive. It was covered in full bottles ...

... up to our expectations. We were headed for the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. In national forests and national recreation areas you are generally allowed to set up camp just about anywhere that you want free of charge. Our first stop was to the Ranger Station to ask for a recommendation. Ranger Rick was a nice slow talking mountain man who went over ALL of our options with very detailed descriptions of the 673 different regions of the park ...
