The marina required a stern to tie up, but unlike any other place we have been, we had a total of 12 dock assistants and 2 dinghies at hand to make our docking easy. I was on the bow of the boat getting my lines ready when a man with a yellow shirt tapped my shoulders –WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOARD??? and indicated with little ...

I ended up in Boca Chica, the resort town nearest the Santo
Domingo airport, for the night. I intended to stop a little earlier in Juan
Dolio, but the highway exits in the D.R. are so poorly marked that I missed it.

Not very pretty as lots of rubbish ...

... drop out after 8th grade as they have no ID documents and so cannot continue their studies. They often end up working in the sugarcane fields and the cycle continues. Also a recent study was done in the region showing that the quality of education in the bateys is pretty shocking, with only a few being able to write their own names.
We then visited various elderly people who had health complications. The charity has helped to fund medical costs ...

    Take me to the River

A travel blog entry by vicky17 on Jan 30, 2014

As a farewell to one of the volunteers here, the group arranged to go to the river. First we had to buy supplies from the market and then pick up the massive sound system which was with one of the group who lives in a bateye. We also picked up a few friends of theirs who joined us for the trip.
Along the way we got to see people working in ...
