It would be very interesting having a look at the road accident statistics here, I expect it would be shocking. It was certainly a longer than usual journey to our first stop in Chieti. We wandered over the ruins of the old castle, took in wonderful views in time for our reservation for lunch. We weren't given a menu at Taverna Caldora, it was all fresh from the kitchen, we had baccala with a light pesto, fried lamb with marinated vegetables and potato, fresh goats curd and heaps of bread, this was followed by ...

For a little variety and to remind ourselves of why we left the cold for winter we caught the 3.5hr train trip through Tivoli to an old country town Sulmona, the birth place of Ovid the Roman Poet. Our B&B, il Marchese del Grillo, is newly rebuilt and with a generous hostess Marta who made us very welcome. Armed with maps and directions we walked around the 13th C town with narrow streets and charmingly old views all around. Snowmelt was dripping ...
