Happy Anniversary on Ice

Today is our 39th anniversary! Nobody will be able to call us, because there is no cell service here. We started the day with a bowl of cereal, coffee, and juice at our B&B. We packed our things and drove back to the parking lot at the footbridge.

Because we had reserved a spot on the half-day glacier hike, St. Elias Guides picked us up on the other side of the bridge and drove us to Kennecott. Our ...

Wendell awoke to the flashing of the freeze alarm on our indoor/outdoor thermometer. At 6:30 AM, it was showing 33⁰F. In cool climates, we have a small electric heater that we put on the “low” setting to keep the trailer from being too cold in the mornings. Even with that, Wendell still had to turn on the propane furnace to get the place comfortable. Under the covers, it was quite pleasant but the trip across the hardwood floors to ...

... a normal one. We visited the North Pole shop, bought souvenirs, took pictures, just what normal tourists would do. We decided to stay at copper center lodge, the only lodging place in town, well, not actually a town, only a few houses, no more than twenty in sight. The room is small since the lodge is old.

... seeing tour of Wrangell-St Elias - but we just couldn't talk ourselves into it (I have a fear of heights that probably only surpassed by my husband's). Instead, we drove part of the way on McCarthy road before heading out to Matanuska Glacier. I should add that this was an last minute addition to our trip. We'd initially planned on spending the night at the MatSu Valley for ...

... into the park, the shortest peak, Mt. Drum was visible. Then as we were leaving, another peak was visible. I'm not sure which one that was. Back at the campground, just above the trees, the top Mt. Wrangell could be seen. Many of the mountains in the range were once volcanic. Today the only active volcano is Mt. Wrangell. It has not erupted since 1900, but frequently emits steam. Tomorrow we are back to Tok as we start our journey east.

Everything goes well, lots of pictures and heading back to Anchorage first thing tomorrow morning, taking the car back to the rental office at the airport and relaxing the remainder of the day. Glenn Highway - Anchorage to Glennallen

... on the time because the road is closed from midnight to 06:00 due to the construction. . Traffic through the area was on an alternating one way basis each time led by a lead car. I had to reflect on the type of work that some people do for a living. Driving a lead car back and forth or holding a sign to regulate traffic for an eight hour shift must be mind boggling and repetitive to say the least. That reminds me of Natasha, the flag person I saw on ...

Hyder, Alaska -- Fish Creek and Salmon Glacier

... this is a world-class drive along this rugged, isolated, winding, mountainous road known as Salmon Glacier or Granduc Road which leads from one breath- taking vista to another. As the altitude continues to climb the anticipation mounts for that first glimpse of Salmon Glacier. When you see it, it is overwhealming in size and grandeur. When I think of glaciers there are several that come to mind. The spectacular Athabasca Glacier just across the ...

Turn Left at Glenallen

Palmer is also where the main highway eastward veers off, so I take that to Glenallen, before heading north again to Delta Junction. The next day is one long drive through the vastness and openness of Alaska. There's really nothing quite like it, and the idea that it’s all tundra and nothingness could not be farther from the truth. That part of Alaska ...
