On 9/9 we rode the Alpine Express gondola, then the Metro Alpine subterrainian cable to reach the Ice Pavillion, the largest ice grotto in the world. In the grotto there were pathways with many ice sculptures along the way. Above the grotto was the world's highest revolving restaurant where we had lunch and enjoyed the scenery, including some dedicated skiers on the glacier. After lunch we went ...

... grown salad. Then Barley soup with creme. We met two of the three generations that have run this hotel for over 65 years. Everyone is so friendly.

Our room is very warm and comfortable with a balcony that winds around the hotel with stupendous views in every direction. We are tired...a nap should help.

Today dawned even better than the last two days. In fact the days have been better than the weather forecast has promised. It is clear that the local weather forecasters do not work for the tourist board. We set off as usual to the top of the mountain. The only difference today being that we took JJ's walking boots to mid mountain and put a couple of bottles of water in the bag as well.

After the late fondue last night getting up was always going to be a little difficult. However, we both made it to breakfast and were one of the first to the bus stop. At Saas Fee we made our usual dash to the gondola, which was already open today, and we set off up the mountain. The next gondola was also open so we went up in that to the underground train so we could start the day at the top of the mountain. On the way up we had entered the clouds so we did not know ...

... three of them before the conditions began to make JJ quite weary. The groomed runs had been cut up into piles the the skiers who crowded onto the runs to enjoy a last weekend which great snow. These runs are the glacier runs and go even higher than the revolving restaurant, so this is as high as either JJ or I have skied before.
