It is my second night staying with my host family in a small rice paddy village. At night time anything that bites, flies, crawls or slithers comes out to feast. There are these huge beetles that are totally harmless but very annoying. They fly blinding into you, onto your food with very little self control. It's a bit more expensive than doing each bit individually but so much less faff. Today is groundhog day insomuch as we go up the beach to the deck chairs and paid the boys on our arrival only to be asked again for payment by someone totally different a ...

In the wee small hours it sounds like someone's in our room. I feel John's hand reaching over to me. We lay there still, frozen, scared. There's something or someone thumping about on our verandah. It goes quiet again and we drop off neither of us brave enough to explore. In the morning, when we finally open our door, we find fruit remains - pips peelings and skins, of rambutans and other fruit, on the verandah. We had heard monkeys ...

... s direction. Then it hangs still until the draft of the fan returns on it's second leg of its oscillation. The cold shower is not a punishment but quite refreshing. Our " Eco/ green" resort offers 'continental' breakfast which includes local eggs, tomatoes, cucumber but also pepper packaged in America ( it grows here?) and sea salt from Italy (?) And, to go with the home baked bread ...
