Monday 10th. Marula Lodge, Swellendam. We ate a hearty breakfast this morning, on the terrace by the pool at Marula Lodge. Trouble is we're just not used to sharing our lives with other people after a week of living out in the wilderness. It's like a convention of the EU on the terrace here...there's Germans, Dutch, French, Brits... So we scooted off to Bontebok National Park as quickly as we could. It's just the other side of the N1 motorway from Swellendam town. But ...

... sizeable village of Langebaan which is super posh, at least in the part of town where the white people live. We stopped for a few provisions at a supermarket and for petrol, then drove south back towards Cape Town and turned off for Darling. Drove through huge landscapes past many vineyards and wineries, and parked for a while in darling to eat sandwiches. Sick in Swellendam

... getting sick, and I've always thought that if something did get me, it would be something nasty. In Swellendam I somehow ended up with a case of gastroenteritis, so ended up staying here for about five days, mostly going backwards and forwards between bed and the toilet. Not very pleasant! Ended up seeing a doctor for a course of antibiotics which sorted it out pretty quickly though.

I was definitely ready to move on by this point...

Highlights: making it to De Hoop N.R despite long gravel roads, the scenery was amazing again: lots of endless farmland, seeing another beautiful N.R -this time spotting a fair few land animals (i think bontebok, antelope, baboons and ostriches), the stunning beaches with more whales(15 was our count)! Our zebra room at Impangele. Dave and Andrea at Impangele for suggesting route62 to us! Lows: the sight of endless gravel roads with pot holes, not too much fun in a rented fiat ...
