    ... good to be home.Summary:

    7/23-8/9 (18 days)
    7,593 total miles
    20 different states
    24 total states (we rode thru Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and of course Pa. twice - when we went out and when we came back)
    Averaged about 9 1/2-11 hours a day in saddle (except 1 day in San Francisco)
    2 tender butts, red faces and tired bodies.
    One VERY dirty bike
    A mountain of laundry
    Too many bills to count

    ... Russell gave her a big tip. She also loved to talk and told us how Americans really don't like to travel too far from what they know, their families are important to them so they generally all stay in the same town and live nearby supporting each other. (not really convinced that stands for everyone, but it is how here family are). She also told us that the Amish people can be really mean, especially the women. ...

    ... we rode 845 kms from Bristol, Virginia through West Virginia, Maryland and finally Pennsylvania straight up Interstate 81. It was overcast all day and we did encounter some drizzling rain but only for about an hour.

    The mountains of Virginia and the rolling hills and fields of West Virginia were spectacular. We had an amazing view of the river ...

    ... back up plans are in the works - maybe a week off after the first summit of Big K, to build up some weight......then another week off a month later (in a trail town), ........then another week off in Harpers Ferry - all to build up weight. But for now - time to not stress over that issue, and get some sleep in! Sunday, June 29 2014 Waking up too early sucks! You have to fall back asleep 10 times.....making oneself a cranky hiker for the rest of this 16 mile day ...

    ... and glad to see us. He was only expecting Gabrielle and Cheyenne. On Steve's recommendation we had lunch at Bert's Diner in Palmerton. Marie had pork chop with mash and fried onion rings, I had calf liver with green salad and carrot and raisin salad,and a peanut butter and chocolate milkshake and rice pudding - HUGE and yum.
