Our guide for the day had a well worn book with illustrations that (if we could have seen them through the sea of IPads taking photos) show how it probably was. There are books like this throughout Greece - they show a photo of the current ruins and an overlay that shows how it was .....in the beginning! ...

    ... Chronologically, it spans 5500 years from Neolithic to Roman times. The setup was beautiful and I was buzzing around snapping pictures of everything. I have since learned that I was also a bit of an amusement to the rest of my group! They figured I'd end up so confused I wouldn't know what write-up went with what picture!! Horrors ...
