... of hours in the rain before finding a pub to dry off and have a drink. Dinner was included tonight and we had a traditional Austrian meal, pumpkin soup to start and pork, sour kraut and dumpling for main. I really liked the soup and the pork but not the dumpling or the sour kraut! After dinner the bus took us out to Prater Park which is an amusement park. It was really cute and there was pretty much just us and a contiki tour there, half the rides were closed but ...

I spent the next couple of days determined to stop feeling sorry for myself and walked through the city in a better frame of mind. I tried to get a feel for how the locals live and work by eating schnitzels and drinking hearty weissbier for lunch, and sipping coffee at bars in the mornings. But to be honest, there were hardly any locals about. Mostly ...
Still, there is a lot I'm going to miss about this city. Its architecture. Its rich history. Its cinemas. Its cafe culture. The American International School (which was every bit the educational utopia they sell you when you're training to teach in college). Seeing people walking down the streets with cello cases over their shoulders. The general absence of cats. The käsekrainers. Oh, the käsekrainers...

This city's main source of revenue in summer is tourism the Viennese have done an excellent job in organizing things to make it easy and that's what we are going to do here - catching a tour of the ring road and it's decadent architecture and off to the Schonbrunn Palace, going to the opera and visiting the amazing baths. ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Spiess & Spiess Appartement - Pension Vienna
Very Pleasant Stay
Wonderful establishment run by the eponymous and very helpful Speiss's.
Our room was big, tastefully decorated, had a lovely view over gardens to the rear and was spotlessly clean.
Nice breakfast of cereals, bread, fruit salad etc. eggs prepared by Herr Speiss accompanied by the "Blue Danube" (I suspect he's heard this tune a few times too many but he bears the strain most well).
The area around the hotel is nice and there are a number of good restaurants on the nearby main street. Metro station is less than 100m from hotel entrance or you can walk in to city centre in about 30 mins.
One of the best stays I've had anywhere.
Don't look any further!
This is the place. We had a week vacation during Easter with our children (6 and 9 years old). The room was very bright and spacious for the four of us, with enough room for the kids to play and relax (after a looong day walking around). The bathroom was of a good size, clean, spotless. There´s FREE wireless internet acces in your room. And the breakfast was deliciuos. I would certainly return! The location is very good, too. With a Vienna card you can use the underground as many times as you need, and it´s true that St. Sthephans Cathedral, the "center" of Vienna, is just five minutes away by tube. This is a good place, no matter if you go with your family, as a couple, or by yourself. Mrs. Spiess will give you advice on the sightseeing if you need to, and Mr. Spiess will tell you were to dine (the nearby Italian restaurant is sooo good!). Have a good time!
Home Away from Home
The owners/managers of this very private hotel have done and do a tremendous job in creating a true home away from home in almost the centre of Vienna. They have converted two apartment houses into a dignified abode with all the conveniences you may wish to have as a tourist (perhaps not as a business traveller). The furniture is modern with a woderful bed and a sofa, chairs for 4 so that you can have visitors, an open fireplace which we did not use, a splendid and well-appointed bathroom and enough mirrors to satisfy even the vainest. Breakfast is more than adequate with eggs coooked to order. My fellow guests were unobtrusive. Free coffee at all times. The prices are very adequate. If you don't want to stay at a grand hotel with plenty of hustle and the chance to run into a celebrity, this is your place.
Great Service! Nice Room! Excellent Deal! Wonderful Breakfast!
The only negative about this hotel was finding it! We decided to take the metro to the hotel, which was very easy, but we accidentally exited out of the station at the wrong doors, which pointed us in the wrong direction! Some very nice Viennese helped us out and the rest of the stay was wonderful! I can't say enough about how helpful and kind the owners were. Mrs. Speiss helped us book our tickets for the hydrofoil to Budapest (which I would NEVER EVER recommend! Think 8 hours of drunken stag party on a boat you can't escape!) and gave us tons of advice each day. Mr. Speiss made us eggs and coffee to order each day for breakfast. The room was spotless. The shower was very new and very strong. It was too warm for a fire in the in-room fireplace, but that would have been wonderful on a cold night. It was not a luxury hotel, but the price was great, the location was very central (and, if you knew where it was, just steps from the metro stop), the breakfasts were hearty and delicious and the owners were gracious and helpful. A real value. They even gave us a gift when we checked out! I would recommend this hotel to anyone!
Vienna's Top Choice
If you are looking for a clean, comfortable, modern place - with a local Viennesse flavour, this is the place. I regularly have people visiting me in Vienna, and all of them are disappointed whenever the rooms are not available. Mrs Spiess adds the sugar on top with a never ending smile, and a devotion I have not seen in any other place I have stayed.
I first came across this place 3 years ago, and they have never let their standards (or personality) drop!
Host is friendly, courteous, extremely helpful with sightseeing spots; Room is spacious, spotless, comfortable, tastefully decorated, really makes me feel 'at home'; Location is only a few minutes walk to the U-Bahn, so convenient to everywhere yet located on a quiet street; Breakfast is delicious and bountiful, what a way to start the day.
On this particular trip, places I stayed in Salzburg and Budapest are nothing compared to Spiess & Spiess.
As a matter of fact, I travel a lot throughout the United States and Asia, and this is one of the best accommodations which I highly recommend to anyone.
See you Ulla next time when I visit Vienna....no need to look for any other place to stay.
This is one of the best places I have ever stayed in. Large rooms, very tastefully decorated. Close to the heart of the city, yet very peaceful street. Highly personalized and efficient service. Great Breakfast. I will definitely like to stay there again whenever I visit Vienna.
Excellent Value - A Hidden Gem
I love to travel and like most travelers I really appreciate when a hotel lives up to my expectations or exceeds them. In this case I had the pleasure of staying at the Spiess & Spiess Hotel, a relatively small family-run hotel that was recently renovated about two years ago.
Having previously stayed at the Hotel de France in Vienna for 225 Euros a night it was a real surprise and absolute delight to find a much better room at the Spiess & Spiess Hotel that was provided to me for only 85 Euros a night; although it may be slightly more costly by a few Euros for shorter stays as I had booked it for three weeks.
The hotel is just outside the centre of the downtown core and when I say "just outside" I mean that it's a five to seven minute walk or one subway/tube/metro station away. It's situated on a quiet street in a safe area (almost all of Vienna is safe) but only a one minute walk to the subway station (Rochugasse).
There were a number of pleasant surprises that I enjoyed during my stay; one was the breakfasts, made by one of the owners and consisting of cheeses, yogurts, eggs (as you like them), breads, fresh-squeezed juices, cereals, fresh fruits, fresh fruit salad etc. Another surprise was the rate applied to phone calls; this is usually where hotels gouge their guests and what a delight to find that the rates applied here were the same as at the post-office, very reasonable, so much so that you didn't mind making those long-distance calls back home from your hotel room.
Another plus was the laundry service available; yes the picked up my clothing, washed, dried, folded and returned it, all for a few Euros - far more reasonable than having struggled around with it to a laundry-mat. So now you have it; my only hesitation in writing this review is that my little secret soon becomes available to all but, hey, they deserve it!
highly recommended. the rooms are large, modern and refined (we also had a real fireplace and in each room there's a laptop size security box) and so are the bathrooms. tha staff is very friendly and promptly comes back to guests' requests.
the location is quiet and in a few steps there's an undeground station to reach the city centre in only 3 stops. They also have a cheap agreement with a garage.
Perfect Bed and Breakfast in Vienna!
After a friend suggested the one-year-old Spiess & Spiess Appartement-Pension for a quick five-day trip to Vienna, I contacted Ulla Spiess via e-mail and effortlessly booked my room. Upon arrival, Mr. Spiess picked us up from the airport and took us to our lovely B&B, which is only a three-minute walk to the U-Bahn station that can take you anywhere in Vienna. The room was very comfortable, spotless and large (for European standards). Breakfast is included and we had wonderful daily breakfasts of fresh squeezed orange juice, fruit salad, rolls, soft boiled eggs and assorted pastries - all overlooking a quaint courtyard. Our proprietors were incredibly helpful and very friendly. I absolutely recommend Spiess & Spiess for a pleasant and comfortable stay in Vienna!
