... to browse in, all I can get here is Axe (US name for Lynx) and unbelievably Brut – they still make that?!
So I headed up along the White Mountain scenic drive and saw some mountains and plenty of snow – the drive tops out at 9200ft. The drive also took me through Apache land. The previous day I had been in Navajo land. These names are very evocative but I suspect for the wrong reasons as my only exposure ...
Silver City seems to be a nice town, there are a lot of small shops open downtown, including a food co-op with a storefront, a bicycle shop, motorcycle shop, etc. There are some old hippies here and a few yuppies too.
Last night we walked into town and had dinner at Nancy's Restaurant, a small Mexican place. It is the same place where Bill used to eat Breakfast on Sunday mornings. In fact, our ...
... to be off to the side and on higher ground as the water came roaring down in a 10 foot wall!
The next day was a 12 mile trek up the canyon, and back. Mind boggling scenery, 72 river crossings and wet feet all day. I’d taken the cleats out of my cycling shoes and they did the trick nicely.
The first nights camp was so good, I had to get me some more time in those pools so I stayed again on the way out. That night I cooked on the fire and guess ...
... the tent and come in. I was on my back with feet and hands bracing the tent.
Some people have been asking what I have been eating lately so here’s a quick run down
Bagels with nutella and bananas, cereal and snickers bars, dried fruit and nut, apples or oranges. Bread or tortillas. Honey, biscuits, Sausage Salami, peanut butter coleslaw mayo chicken and hot sauce sandwiches. Noodles and pasta when I have fires.
Hot chocolates. Bottles of V8 juice,
... trip. Anyway, too cold for me to consider spending a second night there, although in warmer weather I wouldn't hesitate for a moment. I selected a site with a window of a lake view, of course, and set up my tent under the protection of an incredibly textured old tree (see photos). The afternoon was still warm, so I headed out for a short walk down the road a mile to the third campground, taking in the surroundings, snapping some pictures, and back up the hill to Pinon ...
Quemado, New Mexico, United States matthewd... sadness and hurt being elicited in me. (Go ahead, call me a tree hugger, or whatever else you may care to. Your experience of the whole thing might be very different, but this is my story, and I'm sticking to it).
As I said, the severe switchbacks do begin right away, and the going is real slow. In the first hour of this I covered about 20 miles, so you do the math. These are 10, 15, sometimes 20 mph switchbacks, one after another, for miles on end. The whole 90+ mile length of ...
From Bosque Del Apache we drove to Silver City, an old copper mining town with a college campus. Also a place I would consider living at some point. We drove into the Gila Wilderness and hiked along the Catwalk trail. The trail was built to accommodate mining and has a metal path suspended from the canyon walls.

PART II (this is continued from the lat entry. Don't want to be too long b/c I know you're all busy people so it will only take you a couple minutes to read this if you so choose. And hopefully we won't have any problems with heroine/heroin or whatever.) The next leg of our days journey included my favorite type of biking fondly and officially know by me as "dipsey dos." This was a series of rolling hills that ...
Mule Creek, New Mexico, United States joyinjesusWe spent one night in New Mexico and saw a couple sights. One was the Bandera Volcano and Ice Caves, very neat. The ice you'll see is about 25 feet deep, they used to harvest it to keep their beer cold in the depot. Then we had lunch at an authentic Indian Casino, "Chief Wampum's Hotel, Casino, Hair-Care and Tire-Center ...
