... a half delay. This eventually turned in to a four hour delay. We bought some cards and sat up in the dining car and played 'cheat' and a bit of 21, whilst eating Pizza and M &Ms. As we kept checking, the word was that we had to wait for a coroner as someone had jumped in front of the train and committed suicide. ... br> This was a long day of driving - when we reached the Pacific Ocean we followed the coast up to Santa Barbara - could see the Channel Islands off the coast and unused oil rigs. Lovely wide sandy beach, lots of palm trees, lovely resort hotel. Went for a long walk along the beach front and out along Stearns Wharf which is the oldest working wharf - lots of holiday makers around.
... had told the GPS 'least use of freeways' and it seemed to take us of the freeway and then straight back on again a few times. Thinking back we may have just been changing freeways. Anyway* once I was off the freeway I didn't get across 2 lanes and back on again a couple of times. The GPS was really slow at deciding we were on the wrong road and recalculating the route. ... is pretty good - you can tell that Santa Barbara is a bit more upscale. We have dinner at California Pizza Kitchen - think your traditional Italian Pizza restaurant, but with a very Californian twist with Club Sandwich type of pizza fillings among other things. Fun concept, and certainly one of the better franchise restaurants.
Santa Barbara is only a brief stop-over and tomorrow we're moving on to the greater LA area.
