... to some of the rides - going on rides that she never would have even contemplated recently. Good for her! Our last day on the trip was actually a pretty casual day where we went down to Santa Monica Pier, caught the 'end of Route 66', dipped my feet in the Pacific Ocean, and wandered along the Mall, with some final shopping. And so ends five weeks of tripping around and across USA. What a time!!! We've ...

... a half delay. This eventually turned in to a four hour delay. We bought some cards and sat up in the dining car and played 'cheat' and a bit of 21, whilst eating Pizza and M &Ms. As we kept checking, the word was that we had to wait for a coroner as someone had jumped in front of the train and committed suicide. Their body was under the train in two pieces! Not a great reason to be delayed. Passengers were allowed onto the platform but it ...

... br> This was a long day of driving - when we reached the Pacific Ocean we followed the coast up to Santa Barbara - could see the Channel Islands off the coast and unused oil rigs. Lovely wide sandy beach, lots of palm trees, lovely resort hotel. Went for a long walk along the beach front and out along Stearns Wharf which is the oldest working wharf - lots of holiday makers around.

... had told the GPS 'least use of freeways' and it seemed to take us of the freeway and then straight back on again a few times. Thinking back we may have just been changing freeways. Anyway* once I was off the freeway I didn't get across 2 lanes and back on again a couple of times. The GPS was really slow at deciding we were on the wrong road and recalculating the route. Consequently we did a tour of the back streets of Oxnard and ...

... is pretty good - you can tell that Santa Barbara is a bit more upscale. We have dinner at California Pizza Kitchen - think your traditional Italian Pizza restaurant, but with a very Californian twist with Club Sandwich type of pizza fillings among other things. Fun concept, and certainly one of the better franchise restaurants.

Santa Barbara is only a brief stop-over and tomorrow we're moving on to the greater LA area.
