Infamy infamy, they've all got it in for me

... out the walk was a mere training exercise for what was to come the following day as we staggered seven kilometres up a mountain to see the Acropolis sounding even worse than the battered Renault 12s that asthmatically spluttered past us. Even the cab drivers at the top applauded us when we arrived and told us how impressive a climb that was.

Note to Tania, next year on my birthday can we just go to the beach please????

Pergamon Unclichéd II

... might as well interject here that the stone work is one of my fascinations with the ancient world. I mean we see remainders of the mass and craft--the quantity and craft--of work. How did they do it?! I rolled a small block of marble a couple of days ago. It was about the size of a 5 gallon bucket. And it was HEAVY! You really have to wonder how they did the big stuff. The really big stuff. And not only just squaring and putting the ...

Pergamon Unclichéd I

As stated previously, there is a ton of history and pictures on the internet for the ancient classical world and its remnant sites such as Pergamon. I am going to limit this and the next entry to my personal experiences in and around Pergamon and Bergama. In this entry are the pictures--mostly--and experience in the first of two cross country walks that I took in the terrain surrounding the Pergamon Acropolis. The pictures, therefore, and views of the acropolis are ones ...

... seats and awaited our departure - which occurred right on time. There were three, yes THREE, staff members on the bus. One driver, another who I deemed the drive attendant, and yet another whom I gave the title of bus engineer. The driver drove. The drive attendant was wearing a crisp white shirt and, I'm not kidding, a bow tie. He provided service during the ride. The bus engineer ...

We consıdered walkıng but luckıly a publıc bus drove by. Bergama was once called Pergamum. I'm not sure if this was it's name in Roman times, or due to the Greek-Turkish population swap in the early 1900's. Lots of Turkish towns ...

... on the Dardanelles and I also visited a place called Gelibolu, (Gallipoli) where Turkey basically beat Australia's butt in the First World War, as my polish friend told me. It is a quiet sleepy harbour, some car, and cargo ferries and lots of fishing boats, and of course there was a standard Ataturk statue. That's all for now, am busy enjoying my last three weeks in Istanbul.
