... find the right excuse, finally trumped up enough debt and confusion to declare Morocco a "protectorate" in a deal that had the blessing of Spain, Germany, US, and Britain, if not Algeria which was already under the French thumb.

So began France’s equivocal and contentious 44 year development program, centered on Rabat which was shaped by a dose of French city planning. This is the Rabat that exists today. It is remarkable how similar the ...

Crap Campsite but Nice People

... camp site turned off the running water and electricity in the day time so we had no way to use water displacement to flush the toilets or wash our hands. Even better they were charging us €4 per person! Unbelievable! I mean you could eat for a day on €2 or less. Well we only have to endure this till we get our Visas for Mauritania and Mali, though this seems to have proved difficult because it is Morocco’s independence day on ...

Goodness, I hope the people that pay them know what their purpose is, because to me they seem to serve absolutely reason to be anywhere. Occasionally they stop traffic with their whistle and on a rare ...

... enjoying the cheapness after living in Mallorca for so long. Chris went into the market one day and bought a small tuna (big enough for the two of us), big bunches of fresh mint, parsley and coriander, 5 small sweet honeyed samosas and 2 bread rolls for less than 2.50 Euros! Another evening we went out and had a lovely meal at a local restaurant where we had delicious tagines - 18.00 Euros for the 4 of us, though once ...

Tour Hassan

... br>
The end of Ramadan is a festival called Eid al-Fit, "Festival of Breaking the Fast," an occasion for fine clothes, lights, decorations, gifts and visiting friends and family. One of the most popular sites in Morocco during this time is Tour Hassan, a 12th century minaret in Rabat, conceived to be the world’s largest architectural tribute to Islam.

Tour Hassan is a 44 meter tall prayer tower, located on a bluff overlooking the River ...

We thought we had it bad walking round the medina but we met some English girls and went round with them. Honestly, some of the stuff the moroccan guys shout at the white girls is pretty offensive. They are so sleazy it is unreal! certainly not a place for women to come by themselves.

Day 57- Waking up on Tatooine

... of my bag i had to frantically empty it all over the floor in the woods. Olly had the identical experience at the same time. LESSONS LEARNT: dont eat dead catipillar pasta and dont f#ck with Allah during ramadan.

We shortly arrived in Rabat and found our hostel. After meeting some cool people we headed into the medina to test our might.

Note about Morocco: there are hardly any bins about and there is alot of rubbish on the floor. When Alex asked a security ...

News Flash: It Gets Hot in Africa!

... in Arabic. It would be almost as good as my command of "wahed, jusz, tleta . . . !" before they go down the slide. (that's one, two, three . . .!) Unfortunately, I completely forgot the words for colors today so I need to make another cheat sheet for next week. We had a pretty good day at the hospital, except for the HEAT!! It was so blasting hot in the playroom - I'd guess it hit 95-100 ...

Name That Tune!

Salaam, Today was a pretty chill day, relatively speaking. Hospital this morning. We had to wait in the hall for a few minutes until the nurse opened up the play room, and one of our kids came running down the hall and lept into my arms for a hug. Awwwww! What a way to start the day. It was a good day, but the vibe was a little off. Some of the kids were moody, and we had to ...

Don't flush the toilet paper!

... tomorrow or just get shown around, but we're ready either way. We learned that we will be working in the asthma ward exclusively, so that means we'll be based in a hallway of the hospital, setting up our activities on a table out there - keeping sure to stay out of the way of the nurses and doctors! It should be interesting. Apparently, the only time these kids get to play are when ...
