One of the things I had heard from a colleague who had lives on St. Kitts for several years was that Kenneth's Diving Center was the place to go for dives. I had also heard that Dive St. Kitts had a bit of a shady reputation. So, it was a good thing that I had booked with Kenneth's for my dive. They showed up at the hotel to pick me up, and took me …
This week, I spent several of the evenings at the gym again. I definitely felt settled into island life and was enjoying myself, except for the mosquitoes. (I even wore long pants to work one day to try to prevent new bites, but they found a way into the bottom of my pants anyway. Grrrrr.)
I visited another restaurant- Serendipity- …
The first thing to do on a Saturday is the Saturday market, I was told. Despite going to bed early, I was still not getting up with enough time to get there by 6, which is what was recommended. I did get there by 8 though, and it was still happening. The market is in Basseterre, relatively near to the ferry dock. There were people with outdoor …
On Fridays, the plant closes early. I once heard that it was so people could go cash their paychecks before the bank closes, but I don't know if that still applies in this modern age of direct deposit and 24 hours ATMs. One thing that I did notice was that the leaders were walking around, handing out the envelopes instead of having them sent …
This week, I discovered the gym at Sugar Bay. The gym is not just for people staying there, it is public to anybody. One of the ladies from work goes there and had invited me along. For 15 EC, I got daily access so that I could attend the 5:30 class.
The instructor is definitely not professional, but the atmosphere is fun. Some nights, he runs …

I was impressed with the details- ice in the freezer, baking soda in the fridge, tropical beachy furniture and decor. The view of the pool is nice and the kitchenette is stocked with tools. What more could I ask for?

Historical Traveler Reviews Sugar Bay Club Frigate Bay
I just returned from a week stay at the Rex Papillon in St. Kitts. It was by far one of the most enjoyable vacations ever!. As with any Carribean destination this island was absolutely beautiful, mountains, palm trees, turqouise ocean, beaches. But what really made this island stand out from the rest was the people. Everyone was so friendly! And not just on the resort, but everywhere, including in town and on the streets. The staff at the Papillon was great, very pleasant and helpful right from the beginning. The rooms were large and very clean, with new quiet air conditioners. Both TV and AC came with remotes, and channels included USA and HBO. No iron in the room but a call to the front desk will bring one to your door in minutes. The two pools were beautiful, one had a waterfall, man made islands, and a bridge, while the other was restricted to adults only and was a traditional square shape with a deep end. Plenty of pool chairs and towels the whole time. The beach was not great, small and rough. This cannot be blamed on the resort though, it is rough because it is on the Atlantic side of the island and it is small because the Marriot up the beach recently installed a coral reef to improve thier own beach, which caused the tides to change and start washing away the beaches of all the other resorts down the way. A five minute walk will bring you to a Carribean beach on the other side of the island, and there are many beautiful beaches to check out all over the place. I recommend South Friars, with has in shore snorkeling, white sands, and a beautiful veiw of the sunset. Another great beach is Turtle Beach, which is a little smaller, but has a great view of Nevis and a very nice little resaurant to have lunch. Also, the chairs and umbrellas are free, and a waitress will bring your drinks to you on the beach. Good place to see monkeys too, they come right out of the woods and you can feed them by hand. The food at Papillon was exellent, there were a few dishes we didn't love, but the rest of the choices made up for it! Plenty of great things to choose from. An extensive list of island drinks is available at both bars (try the St.
Kitts mama) and all drinks are served with a liberal pour, which is a welcome change from the US. The rainforest tour was beautiful (thanks Roger), as was tour of the island and Brimstone Hill(thanks Sir Walter). Nightlife is not prominent on the island, but it's easy to find if you know where to look! Special thanks to Melvin for showing us around. I cannot stress enough how great the staff at this resort is, and how great all the people of the island are. By the end of the week we felt so at home that we would have done anything to stay. This was the best vacation I have ever taken and my only regret is that we only stayed a week. We will definately return.
Spent a fantastic Christmas in St Kitts
Just returned from Rex Papillon, St Kitts having spent Christmas there.
Staff were friendly, room was large and clean, pools great. Cocktails and food very good. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay there and would definitely return.
Dont bother! It sucks!!
We recently returned from a 2 week stay. although resort fairly well kept we still have gripes about many aspects such as the dull, repetitive, over cooked, tasteless food. As a Head Chef I had to laugh at the tuesday and thursday A la Carte menu. In the end we just ate out most nights because we couldnt stand the same thing reheated to destruction!!! Some very poor staff although certainly not all ( 1 outta 10 to Laurel the (misserable) restaurant manageress, 10 outta 10 to Kesia the (wonderfully)and the sea much quieter helpful cocktail waitress. The beach was tiny in front of the hotel although if you walked about 5 mins to the right of hotel you had nice desserted stretch. The whope place could do with a good paint job as its starting to look pretty tired. The small shop is very expensive next to the hotel. The main town is Pretty busy, noisy, dirty......The shopping non existant. I would not return to the hotel thiough I would return to the Island. Take my advice and go elsewhere. Just not upto a decent standard at all!
Just got back from one of the most wonderful holidays we have ever taken. Went with 11 month old son, hubby and mother-in-law (a recipe for disaster some may say!!) and we all had a great time. The rooms were large and clean, the food was scrumptious (so scrumptious i put on 1/2 a stone so beware!!), and the staff were friendly and could not do enough for you! The island itself is gorgeous, small and underdeveloped and very lush. We took a trip round the island with our taxi driver Ronald which cost us approx £40 for 3 hours in his taxi van (a/c and loadsa room) and it is breathtaking! Everyone waves at you and shouts hello and the islanders seem very proud of their beautiful surroundings. The beach by the hotel was nice but it is on the Atlantic so be prepared to be swept off your feet, but very clean and warm. The carib beach is 10 mins stroll away but was disappointing as volcanic sand not white golden sands of the brochure. Further up by the Marriott is a lovely man made cove and beach but the best beach we found was by the Four Seasons Hotel on Nevis, gorgeous! The hotel entertainment is adequate with Mr T and The Four Plays a great night and the hotel offers an A la Carte menu on a Tues and Thurs which is delicious. We also made use of the hotels baby sitting facilities at only £5 for a night until 11pm!! The hotel was great for babies although Josh was the only one there and there was only one other child but we did go Nov.
Could not buy baby food in shop next door to hotel but could do in chemists in Basseterre about same price as ours and brands like CandG and Heinz and SMA milks available too. Had to make use of chemist for extra mosquito repellant as there were loads of the little blighters!!
Take plenty of citronella oil!! Other guests did advise us that the Rex chain is very good so would love to stay with them on other islands too. We had a truly brilliant holiday and would recommend this hotel to anyone!
Heaven on Earth!!
My family and I went to St Kitts in early July of this year, and I'm already to go back again!! I can not describe how wonderfull this place is!!! My niece was getting married at Romney Manor, and we stayed at at this beautiful hotel!!! Everyone there was so nice to us,from the minute we got off the airplane in St. Kitts, someone was there to greet us,they were so polite to us and very helpful.Everyone at the hotel called my niece and her new husband by their first name everytime they seen them. Words cannot describe how beautiful this place is,we went snorkeling on the Catamaran Boat, those guys on there were so much fun and we all had such a wonderful time, very good people over there, made you forget all of your problems going on in you everyday lives!! I would HIGHLY recommend this trip to anyone!!! my parents are planning to go and renew their wedding vows there,I only hope and pray that I get to experience this trip again!!!!
We have just returned from a week's stay at this lovely hotel. The hotel, the staff, the food and the cocktails were all great. We stayed in a basic garden room, which was clean and spacious. The hotel is situated on an Atlantic beach which is quite rough, but if you walk up the beach the water is a lot calmer near the Marriott. Alternatively, it is a 10-15 minute walk (depending on your pace) to the Carribbean beach. The catamaran cruise is absolutely fabulous. It is well worth the money. You have a BBQ lunch on Pinney's Beach on Nevis (which was deserted), and the crew sent us to the Sunshine Bar for 'Killerbee' drinks. (We found out afterwards that these are overproof rum and local moonshine!) Needless to say we had all had a bit too much to drink on the way back! The crew are very helpful, and nothing is too much trouble. They try to ensure that you have a fab time. Thanks to them we went snorkelling for the first time, as we felt totally comfortable. It was the best experience of our holiday.I'm not sure if this is year round, but while we were there we had buffet meals every night, except on Tuesdays and Thursdays when everyone has a la carte. Frankly, I preferred the buffet and if you are thinking of eating out, these would be the best nights to do it!The hotle does lack evening entertainment, and theonly thing we enjoyed was the steel band night. But there are some bars and Dolce and Cabana is nearby if you want to go out for the night. We thought about hiring a car, but in the end were glad we didn't as it meant we did alot of other things like horseriding in the rainforest and the cruise instead.Hotel is not far from the airport and it is worth getting your own private taxi transfers when you get there (approx cost is 8.00 pounds each way). it is a lovely unspoilt island, and the people really are very friendly. Highly recommended.
Great hotel on a beautifull island
my wife and i have just got back from a weeks holiday at the rex papillon, and i have to say you could not ask for better service as we had, plus clean rooms good food and of course good location,I would go back there in the near future, well done rex papillon
We will return !
Have just returned with my family from the Papillon St Kitts,All inclusive. This stay was sheer heaven. The rooms were spacious, plenty of storage space. We requested a fridge , and one arrived in our room in about 10 minuites! The service was excellent and staff very friendly.
All meals were superb, a taste of the caribbean thrown into each one.
The surroundings were stunning ,we had a pool view, which I thought was lovely. All this said, it was the staff who made our stay special. I would definately recommend staying here, we couldn't fault anything.
The cocktails were the best on the Island ! The entertainment every night was terrific, varied and excellent quality, again, friendly to all that were involved. You must stay here ! !
Just arrived back yesterday from a 6-night stay at the Papillon in St. Kitts. We had a wonderful relaxing time. The hotel offers a very reasonable deal and makes a great base to stay on the island. Rooms are nice, breezy, spacious, air-conditioned. All meals and drinks are provided, so you can dring pina coladas all day, have beer, wine, cocktails before and during meals and liqueurs after all at no extra expense. It is really nice, if you have a rental car, to be able to zip back to the hotel for a free cold drink at any time of the day.The breakfasts are excellent and the lunches and dinners a bit less exciting, but OK all the same. And you can have broiled lobster on Tuesdays and Thursdays all at no extra charge. The pools are nice. One has a big waterall you can stand under. The other is nice for lap swimming. You can sunbathe at the pool or on the beach, and you can also walk all along the beach. There is a casino about three hundred yards away at a major hotel just up the road, and you can go there for meals or entertainment, should you so wish. Fine beaches for snorkelling are not far away, Basseterre, the airport and the train station are all ten minutes away. But the best thing of all at the Papillon is the Kittitian staff, just lovely people who want you to have a nice time. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, and from what I have seen in my comparison shopping, it is probably the best value in St. Kitts.
had a week staying here last February,(2001)
the staff, the accomodation, the food were all superb.anyone looking to stay in st kitts should have no worries at all.
The hotel is well placed to take advantage of both oceans as well as overlooking the golf course.this was one of the best holidays we have had and was down to the freindly atmosphere as much has the natural beauty.
