Otavalo is a once sleepy town nestled between three volcanic giants in Northern Ecuador. Although it's close to the equator, its high altitude gives is a year round spring feeling. ... the nearby crater lake (apparently stunning) which had been the main goal of the trip, however it had closed as it was after 5pm. Not to be deterred, we made a stopoff on the way back to Quito at another lake just outside of Otavalo, and enjoyed a traditional Ecuadorian soup and expensive cappuchino (from a sachet, sadly!) at the lakeside restaurant.

Eventually we made it back to our host's place in Quito, after what could be counted as a good day!
