City Tour

Jim left yesterday taking his cute little Hackentosh computer with him so I'll not be able to upload photos here until I get home. I will be able to upload some to my Facebook page so some of you will see them there. This morning we joined the local historian Elizabeth Bell for a 3 hour walking tour of central Antigua. It was very interesting and I liked some of her terminology - like the ...

4 weeks of Spanish studies and now...

... it. Imagine my surprise, when I learned that Eliane and Matthew – two other students – only were paying the equivalent of USD 90 for 25 lessons per week!! Eliane had found a small pamphlet with these prices, showed it to Mario and thus ended up paying a lot less than me. When I confronted Mario with this, he said that these were the old prices and that the pamphlets were outdated. He said I paid the correct price, as it was written on the internet. I ...

After getting off the bus, we wandered around
attempting to find the ¨super cheapie¨ hostel listed in our books. On
the way, we met a group of kids who tried to help us find it, and then
instead invited us back to their hostel. After finding out they were
missionaries, we politetly declined. Then some Jerry Garcia lookalike
joined in on the ...

Antigua News Update 1

... because they are too expensive, on the one hand. On the other hand, as you know, Granny's or Mummy's meals are always better. The challenge is thus to find "comedores" ie local restaurants or stalls serving "comida tipica" (typical cuisine) in the street. Not easy for a foreigner ... You must either be tipped by someone or walk all around the city with your eyes wide open. At the end of my first week, on Friday 17th ...

Once I took out some Quetzals I pulled over to check my map and I met a guy from Colorado that was riding to Argentina. He was headed to Antigua also so we ended up riding together. WHAT... A... Pacaya, climb the active volcano!

... on the side of Pacaya. There were lava flows visible, like a thick red river flowing out and down the mountain toward Guat city. I took photo on the way up, but at the top, my trusty Samsung camera failed again. I think I got sand in the lens mechanism, as it would stick on opening and closing. So, I don't have shots of the top, you will have to trust me. If I can get Voyo to ship me some pics he will have the lava flow pics. Now, I just have the ...
