... are this unassuming museum. The tour started with an incredibly poignant movie about the seige of Sarajevo and what the residents had to endure. Unbelieveable this happened in Europe only about 15 years ago. A small part of the tunnel is still in tact and we walked through it -- very creepy.
With our visit complete, we realized we had no transportation back to the Ilidze tram station. While contemplating what to do, we walked over to the small stand ...
We woke up just before 6am so that we could catch a local bus to the Bus Station in time to make the 8am bus to Sarajevo. I'd only gotten to sleep after 12.30am so was pretty exhausted. We headed up the hill to the bus stop just after 6.30am and waited. The bus finally arrived just before 7am and drove for one stop and then sat there for the next 20 minutes while the bus driver got off and had a few smokes and a chin wag with some other guys he knew that happened to be ...
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina nicky_s... for what would turn out to be a splurge on dinner. But it was also to turn out to be some of the best veal I've had in long long time. Dinner sorted, the plan was on for the last night in Sarajevo, the Croatian rum was procured, so was the cola, and we were on our way to Cuba Libre glory. A strong thunderstorm in the middle of our drinking session caused us to temporarity shift indoors, and gave us a bit of a scare about our going out plans. But by 2AM, with most of the ...
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina dhruvk... to Ancona. That way I can hang here another day, maybe longer if that's the ultimate decision. This kind of non-decision can have further repercussions in my hyper-travel. Already planning my next trip next month, probably to whichever part of Africa I forego now, if I go at all, for a month with another month in Europe, but the most northern Scandinavian part, assuming the dollar holds up, which right now is questionable, since it ...
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina hardiek... 13 years ago here. From there we went on a tunnel city tour. We were driven around and shown an abridged version of some of the turmoil that was daily life for the Sarajevans. We were brought to the tunnel that was the lifeline for the residents here for three years. The city was surrounded and cut off so no water or electricity was available here for some time. Once the UN got involved the airstrip was under their control. This opened a conduit for supplies to reach ...
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina meganandkevin... me shivering with cold, but after a while he warmed me up to this stage that I managed to fall asleep. I hadn`t felt neither slept so good in a long time. We got up before 11, said goodbye to the lovely guys from France that had done so much for us, and went to do sightseeing. The city had quite nice tenement houses, a market and streets going up and down. We also went to an internet café and befor we even realized, it was ...
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina bogna... a supply and escape route. Includes a drive along 'sniper alley' and major city building sites such as the main library that was destroyed along with 3 million books and still waiting reconstruction 13 years later. Look for the sarajevo Roses - red resin filled motar craters. The government is still run by different representaives - one from all three religeons. Although ...
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina millarmotortour... The tunnel took about 6 months to construct and was 800 meters long (about half a mile), 1 meter wide (3.3 feet), and 1.6 meters high (5.2 feet). While walking through the tunnel, most people carried heavy bags on their back in order to bring as much as they could with them. There are about 20 meters that haven't been destroyed and are now preserved as the Tunnel Museum. Harris told us about his experience as a 7-year-old going through the tunnel ...
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina laura1... The Bosnian ethnic cleansing carried out was even more inhumane than just guns, tanks and missiles. Bosnian women were raped with the sole objective of conception so that they would give birth to Serbian children. This was a vicious war. Many 10 to 12 yr old Bosnian children today are, perhaps unknowingly, a product of this war. How could all this have happened in the 1990s? The simmering rage is quick to surface in many Sarajevans. Understandably so ...
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina claude_and_iain... of you who did history will know that it was this incident that sparked WW1 and arguably the various other events of the 20th century. Later that evening we went to the sarajevo film festival. luckily we were able to see a short film about the wars in bosnia which was quite good. we've got a 7hr bus journey to dubrovnik now which should be quite scenic as we are passing through the mountains. Dovidjenja from sarajevo
