The main, and really only reason for our visit to Pilsen (or Plzen) was … you guessed it …. for beer!!! Apart from the beer, Pilsen has a nice old town, and is the European Capital of Culture for 2015. It is also on the Lonely Planet’s top 10 places to visit in Europe for 2014, so it has to
have something going for it!!!

There is a nice main square (Republic Square) which has the obligatory big old church, ...

Time to leave Prague, Dieter would be outside the hotel near 11am. We had breakfast that the hotel served: toast, meat, cheese, tomatoes and coffee. From breakfast we finished packing then went out to the square to buy some chocolates, macaroons and a cappuccino. We met Dieter, threw our things into the back of the car and were off.

... We weren't told that the end of the road was nearly a mile away. Trams run every few minutes and tickets are validated on the tram by inserting into a machine and pulling a lever. This punches a hole in the appropriate date mark. First impressions are of construction work everywhere, in and out of town high-rise blocks of flats; surprisingly attractive houses and bungalows side by side with fairly squalid looking housing, and generally poor workmanship. There are tiny black ...

The Birthplace Of The Pilsner

This morning we boarded a train from Prague, 2 hours to the small town of Pilsen (Plzen). The allure of this small town is it's claim to fame of being the first place to brew botom fermented amber lager. Firstly, we visited the quirky little Brewery Museum that details the history of beer making in Pilsen from the 1300's when everyone in the town had a license to brew and a large amount of ...
