Venice

Tuesday April 3 We had a sleeper car arranged on a train to Milan. We had some time left before our train got there and had a platform number, so we just sat in the lobby. When it came we left the waiting area...and later realized we had left Sarah's camera behind. Later we found one of the many high school groups from America that were on our train had found it, looked at all the pictures (including some rather embarrassing ones of us slightly drunk), taken some of their own, and gave it bac...

... of this one were Michelangelo’s “David” (of David and Goliath fame) and a series of unfinished works (also Michelangelo) that really gave some insight into his process. Next came the “Renaissance Walk” - about a two hour stroll from one end of the old city to the other, including stops at the enormous and beautiful “Duomo” (the cathedral nicknamed for its imposing dome), the Campanille -bell tower - (where we did NOT climb the ...

Venice to Florence, travel day

... struck Michele about the Venice bridge, well maybe three. First, it was not beautiful. She wonders where the money went. Second, it is not elaborate. She wonders where the money went. And, finally, this is the main bridge across the Grand Canal for newly-arrived tourist and, yet, there is no way to get a rolling suitcase over this bridge without hitting every single step. Could they not create a smooth ...

Venice Day Two, December 9

Blog Day 5 (Venice 2), Wednesday, December 9
We rose well-rested and after enjoying the hotel’s breakfast buffet, set off for St. Mark’s Square, where we spent most of our day. With the national holiday crowds dispersed, it finally paid off to be here in the off season! There were no lines for the Basillica or any of the “extra” (“for a small fee”) attractions on the square. It is no longer allowed to feed the pigeons, with the positive result ...

Venice, Day One

Tuesday, December 8, Venice, Italy.
Sleeper train from Rome to Venice. Sleeper may be a misnomer: we were only on the train for six hours and it was quite noisy, but we were so exhausted from our day at the Vatican that we both slept better than we expected to. Arrived Venice at 0-dark-thirty and decided to hang out at the train station and have breakfast, awaiting daylight, before taking the vaporetto (water bus) to our hotel. We ...

Water, blown glass, bridges, and gondolas!

The two weeks after finals were very interesting and fun… Katy, Steve, Kelsa and I took a night train to Venice to start our trip. The train was not as nearly as bad as the one we took to Paris… at first, Katy, Kelsa and I were in a 6 person seating compartment with 2 other people serving in the military in Germany, but Katy and I quickly realized that the train was almost empty, so we took ...

Staying constantly lost!

... an adult Disneyland. And it was very warm and of course, humid, since it's right on the water.

But, you gotta go and check it out. Very expensive. But, there are NO wheels that are motorized in the whole city (well, at least where I was). Everything is carted around by people, all the food, drink, etc ...

A Wonderful Day in Venice

... to get up to - some solo shopping and a massage are looking good right now as my legs are about to give way. We are off on a tour of the Chianti region on Thursday and then pick up a car for 2 days travelling around Tuscany and the famous outlet stores. The leaning tower of Pisa is on the kids hit list so we will be definitely going there. I will continue to write about our adventures - it may not be tomorrow night but it will be soon. Until then, take care and Ciao from Florence...........

... getting lost again (even though we had walked to the hotel from San Marco several times) we eventually reached home. DAY 31 MON This was to be our day for island hopping. One of Margaret's main objectives for the entire trip was to buy some Venetian glassware. To this end we caught a vaporetto to the island of Murano, home to the greatest concentration of glass shops in the world! After spending several hours looking at the greatest concentration of Virgin and Child pictures the previous ...
