We turned off for the old city of Aspendos. The first thing you come to is the bridge across what was a pretty fast flowing river. I guess the snow is melting fast and the water looked the pale green colour of very cold melted glaciers. (We know we have tried to swim in them in Kazakhstan. A.) The bridge is a recent 12C version of the Roman bridge which stood there.

... book indicated it was a 20-30 minute climb up a stepped path to the site. It should have said "steep rocky stepped path"! Anyway we made it! The flames are caused by gas seeping out of rocks and combusting when they hit the air. They burn out. Really neat to see. The guide book says if you cover the flame it will extinguish only to start in another hole. The best time to see it is at night ...
... so seeing what it was exactly like is tricky and maybe the pictures show this.
The city is set at the top of a couple of mountain passes and was apparently a tough fortress since Alexander the Great gave up besieging the place in 333BC and moved on.
