At the end we found a photographic art exhibition containing enormous photos with data and short, pithy interview notes focused on the growing elderly prison population in the States. It was housed in a huge, rather decrepit (intentionally I am sure) old workshop. It was fascinating, imposing and heart-wrenching.

1. one of the workers on the island who handed out the audio headsets asked every person where they were from. EVERY PLACE THE PERSON WAS FROM HE KNEW SOMETHING ABOUT THE PLACE. ...
We parked close to Pier 33 (USD 14 for 12 hours) and started to walk towards the Alcatraz Landing. It was 8.30 and the place was already packed with lots of tourists. The first boat was scheduled for 8.45, but we had to wait for the next one departing at 9.10. In the meantime we could walk around the model of Alcatraz Island and go through some basic information about this eldest federal prison in the United States.
