We were feeling so much better knowing that we were catching a sleeper train down to Ho Chi Minh (which is still referred to Saigon by everyone except officials). Our train was due to depart at 8am and arrive at 4am the next morning.
We shared our taxi from the hotel with two Dutch ladies who were taking the same train but only to Dalat, a few hours down the line. They had done a sleeper train already and warned us that it is by no means luxury. We explained that we had done numerous s...
More than most countries, Vietnam always seems to hold a great romanticism and mythical status with people who visit. Possibly due to the abundance of cult war movies on offer and the brilliant soundtracks that are inseparable from people's ideas of what the country is about... however this is the first time that the myth failed to disappoint. I'm not sure if it was just finally getting out of China, but we all agreed- from the friendly people, to the laid ...
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam mattcracknell... put on Dexter for us to watch. Kythera fell asleep halfway in for ten minutes. Catch the z's when you can, I guess. After the kids were woken up by a stupid family who had everywhere in the shop to sit but sat RIGHT next to us and let their kid crawl over our sleeping Jojo, we wandered off and did some looking about.
We checked in and sat in the arrivals lounge. Our flight was scheduled to board at around 5.00 for a 5 ...
... weary of its weight, and headed to the desk, where I was handed my passport, finally, and had only to put my bags through a scanner manned by a typically bored looking official before heading outside to the waiting bus. In total I had stood there for just over half an hour. Every other border crossing I have done so far has simply and logically required me to turn up, holding my own passport, which is then taken, stamped, then returned to me. Why on earth is Vietnam ...
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam alastair6... girls ran outside to call someone. A guy promptly ran into the shop and proceeded to work on his hair. Ha! Joke's on the little piglet! Good news is that $5 later, he's not only a beau bonhomme, he's a REALLY beau bonhomme!
Next stop: the Rex Hotel, where, as we mentionned in yesterday's entry, the CIA was headquartered during the war. We went to the famous Rooftop Garden to enjoy an exorbitantly overpriced beer and San Pellegrino Aranciata Rossa ...
... cars as the mopeds will miss you. As we were passing the huge market we popped in for a look to see what bargains we might buy - it was pretty much the usual collection of watches, t-shirts, sunglasses and tourist tat. At the ATM we encountered our second problem which was the ridiculous amount of money we could get out per transaction - only NZ$200. We soon found out why when the machine spat out a huge bundle of notes - it translated into over 2 million Vietnamese ...

Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam chudu24... were sleeping on their boats around 10am and then passed them at the end of the tour around 3.30pm, both were still partially unconscious in their hammocks. They could have gone out and come back but the old women rowing us were so damn slow it made it hard to tell.

I was very tired when I arrived in Nhe trang and worse than that, I stank and hadn't brushed my teeth for a very long time. Leaving my big bag in the bus office, I went in search of breakfast and a toilet where I could change out of my clothes and freshen up. For once I was grateful that all Asian toilets have a shower head in them ...
