Machu Picchu

We took the train from Cuzco to Machu Picchu.  We left in the morning and it was quite cool.  The train was modern and comfortable and gave us a nice meal.  The village has a tourist flavor to it.  I enjoyed the complete absence of modern city noise.  The bus trip up the mountain to the site is an experience in itself.  It takes about half an hour.  The site itself was magical.  We had a great guide who helped explain the magic of the "Lost City".

... carrots, mashed potatoes and artichoke hearts. (Kris- there wasn't any stalky leaves with the hearts). I think there was a dried yucca spear in the potatoes. We took the hotel shuttle to Miraflores suburb that is on the ocean. At several stop lights along the way there were people and young children walking among 4 or 5 lanes of traffic selling drinks, toy cars, medium sized globes and other items. The shops were mostly typical ...

... quick rabbit trails before i go to bed.
1) today after we all woke up from a comatos-like nap, i stepped into the open air hall our our hostal on the third floor and saw some boys playing. the one closest to our door looked up at me with bulging eyes and clinched teeth, meanwhile his hands clinched something in his trousers, and his feet shuffled and wriggled as though covered in ants or something. now, we'd recently heard of the phenomenal folklore ...

Well, we are all alive.....just!

... the spiral staircase with no bannister and a massive 3,500 drop to my right with no vegetation to cover the certain-death drop. After a while I started assuring Davy and T-M I had something wrong with me and couldn´t go on but as this had been my war-cry since the very beginning I was largely ignored. However, eventually I had to stop and started hyper-ventilating, shaking and had pins and needles in my face and chest. I actually felt my face was becoming paralysed. It was ...

Machu Picchu

... Picchu has such a calming feel and we sat and enjoyed the sunshine while looking out over the mountains and valleys. The ruins are built so precisely, each brick fitting perfectly with the others to hold the buildings or walls together.

And as equally exciting were the Llama that wander around the ruins and keep the grass mowed. These guys got just as much attention from the tourists as the ruins!

... stukken.

Every so often in the hike we would be passed by these porters from our group and other groups, running by us carrying these huge loads wearing only sandals. Insane how fit and efficient they are! By the time we reached a campsite for lunch the porters had already set up the lunch tents and lunch was ready! We were given a cup of tea, a bowl of soup and a plate of chicken or fish with rice and veggies each day for ...
