... town had not be spoiled by tourism. I guess the road is preserving them for the time being.

Now that we had taken up surfing it was time to test out our skills. Upon arriving at the beach we were amazed with the sprawling jungle, set right up to the beach hugging the crystal blue Pacific Ocean. Next was the wave! One perfect wave that rolled along the beach, which seemed like almost forever. We stopped and found the perfect spot right on the beach, with most of the ...
Pavones, Puntarenas, Costa Rica cmedancing... Jimenez in the Osa Peninsula.

Costa Rica is expensive when you are travelling on a backpackers budget. Because of this Al and I decided to only spend a week in CR and do the Osa Peninsula, thus going "off the beaten track" (well according to the Lonely Planet that is!). The Osa Peninsula has been described by National Geographic as "the most bio diverse place on earth". The amount of wildlife and plant life here is apparently amazing and its well worth going. We decided that ...
Puerto Jimenez, Province of Puntarenas, Costa Rica mardow... had arrived at the river crossing at high tide rather than low tide, and had had to cross with their packs held above their heads, the water was that deep! The rest of the hike was straightforward - either along deserted beaches, or a bit inland - but long, and during the beach sections, very hot. I can't remember the last time so much sweat poured off me! But we were able to add several more animals to our list of sightings, and for some reason the ...
Puerto Jiménez, Puntarenas, Costa Rica matt.s.wise... of the sort. Although the road out of Manuel Antonio is poor for the first 40km but after that through Dominical it's a good tarmac road all the way to Panama. We ended up getting collected at 7am after breakfast and arrived at Sierpe Dock, to get a boat round to Corcovado at 10:30. Sierpe is a small town based around the dock which sits on the Rio Sierpe, a river estuary and mangrove out to the Pacific. It's a Little bit of ...
Corcovado National Park, Province of Puntarenas, Costa Rica chris.parkerPenisola di Osa, golfo Dulce.
Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica alezg... the Osa Peninsula, which National Geographic called the most biologically intense place on Earth. Up to this point in the trip, I hadn't seen wildlife even on my hikes and was looking forward to finally seeing some tropical animals. During my stay there, I saw some scarlet macaws, which are parrot-like birds which are red, blue, and yellow. I also saw chestnut-mandibled toucans, squirrel monkeys, white-face capuchin monkeys, caimans, and crocodiles. During a sea ...
Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica joeleeis... boat. We rented a kayak and paddled up the river. Ido was not too impressed with Phoenixs paddling skills, so he took over using two short paddles as one big one. When we got tired of fighting the current upstream, we turned around to float back down the river. Almost immediately after we turned around, we saw a bull shark in the water right next to us. The water was less than two feet deep so we could see it really well. It was only about 3 feet long but ...
Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica phoedo... and i jump in and i start to drive down the street and when we pick up kirsten she just starts laughing at what a piece this thing is!! and not only is it a piece but the roads, most of which aren´t paved, but all, have huge pot holes EVERYWHERE. soo it is an understatment to say that it was a bumpy drive!!! but pretty much the ****in dopest **** ever!!! haha anyways, we finally get to the waterfalls and they are as beautiful as always, we ...
Santa theresa, Costa Rica maiamuffin... to tropical research, but not as essential as icecream 4. Grad students are more mature than undergrads, mostly, but if they are treated like kids they will act like them 5. some people think that you can mix rum and beer and juice and coffee and make a delicious drink 6. plasticine is not good for modeling things in the tropics. Things eat it. Or don't eat it. 7. weekends really are necessary for sanity, but sanity isn't necessary to do science.
