People said, "It's grey and damp in Lima, you won't like it." Well, it is but we did. It is winter after all and what Scottish skies, although the "rain" was never more than a wee drizzle. We did the usual city stuff, museums, churches, falling over on high kerbs, visiting the dentist to fix sore tooth, watching parades etc and left after a very pleasant if a bit painful few days. We did have a funny night when we noticed a classical concert advertised and went along only to discover, (too la...
Piura, Peru joyceanddaveTrials & Tribulations in Central Peru Now you must understand that if you breathe air, as I tend to do, you need to acclimatise to heights, especially before doing a 4 day mountain trek at an average height of 4500 metres. I knew this, and was inwardly delighted I had the foresight (well luck) of 3 weeks acclimatisation of 2500 metres before arriving in the central highlands town called Huaraz. But as I was soon to find out, very little was going to go right in Huaraz, and this started ou...

As I got closer, Amilcar started giving me instructions on how to get over it, and before I knew it I was standing on top of a little ledge, finally able to rest a bit. I started climbing again after a minute or two, not really thinking IŽd finish it, but just figured IŽd go, but after I bit I realized that I was so close I couldnŽt stop yet. If scaling a 100 foot wall one time is incredible ...
Huaraz, Ancash, Peru mpbezold... yet we were so close to the city! The walk was fine, I donńŽt think we went up very high in altitude but we walked for aobut 3 or 4 hours and felt like weŽd covered some distance. I omnyl had my converse as walking shoes, and after our afternoon walk my feet were a bit sore, so i decided to invest in some more robust walking type shoes which will also be useful when weŽre doing the inka trek. Managed to pick some up for 50 soles, roughly $16
Grey, wet, smoggy. Not London, but Lima and as soon as we had arrived on the overnight bus we had wanted to leave. Getting ripped off by the taxi driver sealed the deal. I`m sure Lima has many a redeeming feature, but we weren`t going to find out on this trip what they were. Most people hadn`t said the kindest words about the capital, but more importantly we wanted to spend more of our time out of the cities and in Huaraz, a town in the north of Peru at the ...
Huaraz, Peru eugenecash... Severely. One of my dormmates (who has taken to calling me ŽBlistersŽ) took a picture to show me, but it probably wonŽt make it up here. A bit gruesome. Final bodily complaint: my left big toe, which I broke and whose nail I really messed up years ago, decided it was time to shed the nail. Gross I know, but it happens every year or two, this is just really inconvenient timing, as itŽs now super sensitive and I have ...

The glacier was pretty enough and the weather was clear, allowing good views around the mountains. The tour was probably for people who've never seen ice before but it was quite good and there were some good views. And it was free, of course. I even found some iron and copper mineralisation at the top with some pretty rocks so that made me happy.

So now we will be heading to the hot springs near Chavin and then on to Lima....

Thank God Antonietta was the translator as I wouldn’t know how I would explain well my situation with what had happened with my camera. He squinted as he looked at my camera with a smoking cigarette still clenched between his teeth. He thought he knew what ...

The tour ended soon after with a visit to the underground tunnels which consists of a maze of alleys and chambers. We then looked at the carved stone heads which were on display above ground. Afterwards we made our way to the town of Chavin itself which is just north of the ruins. It is a quiet, little town with a flower-filled plaza. We strolled around ...
