Nice B&B in Great Location but Staff Was Very Unpleasant

We stayed at LaPension for three nights in early August. It's a lovely house and our room was comfortable and well-cared for. However, with the exception of the man serving breakfast on the first morning there, the staff made you feel like they were doing you a favor to help you. We had to ask specifically for breakfast each day despite the fact that we had clearly come downstairs for that purpose. On the day we were checking out, we were handed our bill without being greeted or asked if we wanted breakfast.

Also, beware that Carlos, the staff member we dealt with primarily, will recommend a restaurant called Seven Fishes (he recommended it to everyone there). We ate there and were very disappointed with the food, atmosphere and service. It was definitely the most disappointing meal of the trip. The food was unoriginal, bland and over-priced. The atmosphere crowded and the service very cursory. It almost felt like there was a Chamber of Commerce of Rude Businesses that would refer business to one another.

It's too bad, really, because LaPensione is a lovely facility and well-located, but we would definitely not stay there again.

Great room, less than hospitable staff!

This was my first trip to Key West, but my husband had vacationed there often. He was impressed with the B&B and I really cannot say anything wrong with the accomadations! The only concern was the B&B staff. They were not very friendly and one female staff actually yelled at us when attempting to get some OJ that was behind the counter after being told to help ourselves stating that we could not go behind the counter...please explain "help yourself" guidelines next time. The pool was very nice, the B&B was very clean, location was good, and the air conditioner kept us cool in 95+ degree weather. Next time I will look at another place to stay. I guess I should have known this wasn't the most friendly place when making reservations I asked how far the beach was from the B&B, "I don't know why people always ask that question?" I guess I expect to be pampered or at least treated like the staff appreciate my business since I could have chosen many other B&B's to stay!

A friendly peaceful stay

I stayed in room 3 which is pool side and very convient to the pool and the side gate. The room was nicely decorated yet simplistic with a very relaxing color scheme. The sitting area was very comfortable as was the bed. There are ceiling fans in both the bedroom and bathroom. Of course there is ac as well. I had plenty of hangers and storage for my clothes. Extra towels are available if you need to grab some for the pool and a hairdryer you can grab if needed. The breakfast was enough to tide me and my husband over until dinner that afternoon. The waffles were delicous!! I had read about them before I booked with the B&B. I also read conflicting things about the innkeeper which I must say was as nice and helpful as could be . I felt completely comfortable around him. Everyone was nice. There are helpful brochures in the hallway on things to do and see. They offer bike rentals here as well which you can get for the day. They also have an soda and ice machine by the pool. It is a beautiful yellow mansion which is the Italian meaning of La Pensione. "The Mansion". It is very convient location wise and a few blocks from the main strip of Duval. There are no tvs but you can be creative and find much better use of time. I loved my stay there and would definetly recommend it as well as stay again . :)

A Peaceful Stay

A beautiful place to stay in Key West. Our room was immaculate, overlooking a peaceful pool and gardens. The staff was very friendly and helpful as to local sites and nightlife. We'll definitely pay another visit.

Dirty rooms, no hot water, and owner is very rude

My wife and I have been to Key West every year for 36 years. Never have I been treated so badly by the man who claimed to be one of the owners. Here are some quotes from a conversation about the fact that our bed sheets were not clean and there was no hot water. Starting with "what do you want" not hello. "we do not have to guarantee hot water, in fact running water at at all!" "sheets may have an odor and a stain or two, do you expect new sheets?" I would have accepted a little kindness, I was not rude. I simply checked out. I've stayed in over twenty places in Key West and this is the worst by far. Stay away.

Nice place, shame about the attitude!

La Pensione is a lovely property and well located in Key West. We stayed in room 9 which is very nice but does face a main road and there was some traffic noise (of which we were pre-warned.) The stay however was spoilt by the man I assume ran the place (we never had an introduction) and his rude attitude towards us.

Wondeful B&B

Very charming B&B. Immaculately clean rooms with comfortable beds. Super quiet location is just a short walk to all the action. Plenty of onsite parking and nice pool available. The homemade waffles were excellent but the remaining breakfast choices were not so interesting. Very friendly and helpful innkeepers made us feel like old friends.

LaPensione-wonderful experience

My husband was pretty skeptical about booking his first bed and breakfast, but Carl and his great waffles, advice, and friendliness quickly made him a believer. Our room featured a king sized bed and two sets of french doors to a wrap around balcony. Everything was immaculate and the pool was very inviting. My husband even admitted that having no tv was worth the stay at LaPensione.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Our stay at La Pension was wonderful. We were treated like we werer old friends. Carl and Carolyn were excellent innkeepers. They gave us great info on daytrips and where to hang out for the nightlife that suited our personalities. The rooms were very clean and the beds were comfy! The breakfast was great and it was just awonderful stay, a home away from home.
