... driving though. It is cowboy country and further back than that, it’s where the Europeans came and ****** over the Indians. Now, all that’s left are these historic sites and sad towns where alcohol is banned and the Indians don’t seem to have a very good way of life (as judged by our typical standards). A couple of taller buildings in the “downtown” area, but for the most part we see mining equipment, silos, industrial warehouses. We stop for gas in Big Timber. ... pleasant secondary highway, through some innocuous small towns and along some pretty rivers and rain forest. At noon we stopped at Deception Falls rest stop which had a lovely half mile loop walk along a pretty active little river with falls and rapids. The walk had some interesting interpretive signs along the way.
We did run into snow on Stevens Pass, and then through much of the plateau land east of Wenatchee, but the roads were bare. The weather was ...

... the shape of it, the columns and size of the rocks that have tumbled down from the columns, the foolhardiness of the climbers I saw. This place has very powerful spiritual significance to many First Nations people and it’s easy to understand why. It is amazing and wonderful. I was reluctant to leave and chatted with a few people before I did, including two guys getting ready to climb ...
