Dogubeyazit, Agri Province, Turkey desequerah... On an excursion south of Van I had met three young Turkish fellows, two of them teachers (the third being the young brother of one). They invited me to spend the night with them in the small town east of Van in which one of them taught. Except for the drive back to Van in the morning, through some mild scenery, it was a friendly excursion, but not much more.

Then their plan was to drive north to the town of Ercis to visit the family of the one ...
Doğubayazıt, Ağrı Province, Turkey oldrover... the photos are self explanatory but you are very welcome to visit my Mt Ararat June 2009 climb in aid of Bowel Cancer for more info.

Change of mind - I would like to say a little bit about our climb - AWESOME!!!!! We have never climbed at high altitude before, certainly never climbed such a high mountain, never climbed in snow, never climbed over glaciers, never slept in a tent in a snow ...
DogubeyazIt, Agri, Turkey sallycousens... Our bathroom facilities in the campsite were little to be desired. The showers were flooded ankle deep and smelt like toilet, and we only had squat toilets, now christened "Steve-Os" because of his intense dislike of the whole experience of them. We all spent a bizarre evening in the campsite bar, dancing with Turkish men to Turkish music, drinking Turkish beer. It was a relatively big night because we all knew that in a few days ...
Dogubeyazit, Agri Province, Turkey noodlerheadAs we headed north up the western boarder of Turkey, a stop in Dogubayazit was essential. (It's pronounced "doh-oo-bay-yah-zuht." If you give up, do what we did and just call it "dog biscuit.") The city has 2 things on offer - the incredibly scenic Ishak Pasa Palace and fabulous views of Turkey's highest mountain, Mt Ararat. It also has a sizable military presence as the city sits nestled ...
Dogubeyazit, Agri, Turkey jon_and_lizTravelled from Kars/Ani to Dogubayazit (we call it Dog Biscuit) to visit the Ishak Pasa Palace. Very beautiful and dramatic on the mountainside. Ran into a man when we got off the bus who is a tour guide and import/export business, and he invited us into his office for tea, gave us lunch, and set up our tour of the palace and a pickup for ...
Dogubayazit, Turkey cbelloliHopefully this current spell of blogs isn't overkill but I'm seizing the moment. I am never sure when the opportunity will come again, maybe tommorrow, maybe next month. We find ourselves in Doggybiscuit today which sits beneath Mt Ararat (biggest mountain in Turkey) and is the last outpost before Iran. Tanks and armoured vehicles are everywhere (post Kurd-Turk civil war precautions) and the area doesn't support any tourism bar the main attractions ...
Maku, Iran pajasYou know you are in Kurdistan when the children on the side of the roads, instead of waving at you, are throwing rocks... but you also know because the landscape changes dramatically and the green golden hills make your heart beat faster. One of the highlights of the ...
