Vermont cooks!

87 degree temps does not encourage fall colors! However, a stop at Ben @ Jerry's eased the warm day. Crossed from VT to NY via Lake Champlain ferry ($23). Ausable Chasm was worth the stop...and provided a scenic hike. Colorful trees amidst interesting layers of rock were amazing! Staying at Black Bear Camping in NY for 3 nights allowed us to explore the area. Even tho we missed our scheduled West Point tour......got ...

Day 8-9 Smugglers Notch

Day 8/9

The "Green Mountain State" has definitely lived up to its name so far. We took the car ferry from Port Kent, NY over Lake Champlain into Burlington, VT. The ride was just under an hour but offered stunning views of the green, green mountains surrounding the area. Burlington is a beautiful historic city with a young, trendy downtown. Visiting Church St was highly recommended so we spent a few hours there. The shops, cafes, and restaurants ...

We arrived at the resort at 4 PM. Registration did not start much earlier. We have a two bedroom, two bath condo that has a really nice large back porch. We have a good view of a field and woods. We found Shaw's for groceries and got pizzas and salads from Stowe's Pie in the Sky which were really good.

... green hills rather than soaring peaks with highest elevations in the Green Mountains considerably lower than those in New York’s Adirondacks or New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Montpelier is an attractive little town, but I didn’t spend enough time exploring it beyond the State House to do it justice. It was just too hot a day to spend much time outdoors walking ...

Stowe & Waterbury - High in the Green Mountains

I took the back way instead of the interstate from Burlington to Stowe and Waterbury. Route 108 crosses a flank of Mount Mansfield, highest peak in Vermont at 4,393 feet, past Smugglers Notch and Stowe ski areas. Mansfield is not particularly high and from what I understand not that difficult a hike/climb, but with it turning out to be one of hottest days of year I was not in mood for strenuous activity. It's a state high point peak ...
