Perfect time to spend at naukuchiatal

... days we spent at the Lake resort naukuchiatal were so wonderful that we had a great time with our kids. My wife and i are really thankful to Mr. Chander to giving us the discount and free last night dinner . I was totally surprised when he came in the evening and said that the dinner would be provided by the resort as he is the lucky guest to receive the Discount. The Rooms at Naukuchiatal resort were quite spacious ...

Poisoned

... was cow feces or human feces which I had inadvertantely ingested that had confined me to nowhere but my bed and the toilet for the past fifteen hours.

It's funny: back in America, I might be proud if - with my penchant for sweets - I managed to eat only half of a cookie and then put the rest down. Here, too, I am filled with a sense of pride and accomplishment for eating half of a cookie, but for very different reasons. I guess it's one of those glass-half-full sort of situations.

Colonizer

... your own thoughts being biased by Western definitions of modernity and progress, where apologies and introductions and explanations get lost in the translation from Kumaoni to Hindi to English to Hindi to Kumaoni.

Sometimes, I wonder - and worry - if I should even be here at all; if I am only reproducing colonial hierarchies or perpetuating the false idea that the people here need some sort of outside assistance because they can't figure out their problems on their own. But ...

The General

... for General McPurdy took advantage of our timidity and crawled into a crack in the floorboards. He hasn't been seen since.

It took me two hours to get back to sleep that night, even with my covers over my head. I live in a constant state of anxiety, knowing that he could be behind any loose item in the room which I reach for, could be underneath any stone which I put my bare foot on, could even have crawled inside the very same quilt that I use for protection...

God help us.

Hill Stations, Tigers and Pandas

... hottest part of the afternoon. A tiger was sighted early into the safari and we felt quite privileged since tiger sightings are getting rare. There are 165 tigers in Corbett and given the land area (about 3 times the size of New Delhi), that is not a lot. We also saw some wild elephants, monkeys, deers, birds etc. A very very hot and humid afternoon. We definitely felt the onset of summer in India, and are making our way to North India where hopefully it will ...

CHI, CHI, CHI,CHI

... get on the unreservd carriage was mental! The two girls had the top sleepers and i was in the middle, i didnt get too many stares sleeping contrary to what i was told. Lets just say i didnt have the best of sleeps on this train, between the young Indian boy shouting 'CHI CHI CHI', which i figured out later meant tea, and the lovely waft from the urinals very little snoozing was gotten. So 8 hours later we arrived in Kathgodam where we were lit upon by ...

Haridwar - The Gods Must Be Crazy

... for the remainder of the afternoon, while the chaos and heat of the Haridwar streets continued outside. By dusk we were down at the Har Ki Pairi Ghats, which is the holy centre of the city. It is a combination of temples and concrete walkways right on the Ganges river edge. The Ganges actually flows further around from this area, but the river has been dammed so that a canal of water is always flowing at speed through the Har Ki Pairi, even during the dry ...
