The visit to the Auschwitz concentration camps is hard to describe. Everything is very neat and tidy, the brick buildings look well cared for, the grass is cut, there are roads and there is grass and green trees. And then you notice the barbed wire, you hear the commentary from the guide, see the exhibits and inside the buildings and you realise that it is not what it seems.

Hike to Morskie Oko, the Eye of the Sea

... on a path made of big rocks. The view was amazing and the water was so clear and fresh. We even filled up our waterbottle on the hike up using run off from the mountains. Then we got the horse and carriage on the way back down the mountain. Then we got the bus to Zakopane and then to Kraków ...

... keep walking without getting tempted….lots we would have considered buying had we the spare luggage room and cash. And more to the point we don’t really need them. Lots of berries and local little ‘stamped moulded’ bun type rolls that I think have different kinds of savoury fillings, I think like a pastie? We bought some berries and tried them later in the day. Mmmm they were the nicest I’ve ever had.

... The Hungarian nights charged at the Mongol soldiers and just as they reached them the Mongols on their very nimble little horses divided and road around each flank of the Hungarian Knights and before they could do anything the Mongols had slaughtered them from behind. The castle fell to the Mongols.

We spent about an hour walking the castle and climbing to its highest point for a view of the Danube river below and the settlements on the far bank.

... take a few hours and didn’t seem overly challenging - so why not give it a go! We hadn’t factored in the scorching sun when we set off and after a few too many hours (and only 45mins left till the top), we called it a day! We sat on a high ridge, soaked up the stunning view of Mount Giewont and the Tatras and headed back to town.
