Scottish castles and monkey versus dog...

... aggressive - and climbed to the monkey temple. Queued to be blessed by the holy man in the shrine - a saffron dot placed on our foreheads. The holyman paused in doing this only to take a call on his mobile - new India v old India cliche.

Leaving the temple we nearly were nearly caught in the cross fire of a turf war between a troop of monkeys and the local stray dogs. Much baring of teeth, shreaks and barks. It was unclear as to who won.

All aboard the toy train...

... diesel engine pulling us up hills no train should be able to manage, crossing hundreds of bridges and passing through dozes of tunnels. All built to take the British to Shimla, which during the summer months was used as the British Raj's capital. Each small quaint station enroute has two signs, one telling you how high you've climbed, the other a quote promoting religious harmony.

Shimla- Old British Hill Station on the ridge

... used this city as a retreat from the oppressive summer Indian heat. They actually administered the colony from here during the summer months. he town itself is laid out on a series of ridges and the center of town, called Scandal point is located where the ridges come together. Smaller shops and homes were built below on both sides of the ridges.

The British influence is clear as you look at the major buildings and architecture. We saw the ...

Shimla - If you cant beat em.....

... kind, bag wallahs, HA! i sweep them off like flies. Well mostly. After a period of time travelling you begin to adapt in your own unique manner, a method of whereby you deal with the afforementioned pains in the rectum. Bag wallahs touts and anyone who falls under the umbrella term of "scummy con man who wants to steal everything but your 3 day worn boxers". Allow me to bead these pearls of wisdom into a necklace of knowledge for your ever grateful selfs: 1 - Dont take it ...

Christmas in the Himalayas!

... centre of town, but we were on the top floor, and had a spectacular view of the snow covered Himalayas, which rose like a white wall behind our green-brown valley. We rested the first night, eating well and relaxing in our room, which we later found out had been recently used as the honeymoon sweet. That explained the flowers and frilly curtains! We checked to make sure we had fresh sheets, then went to bed. The next day we journeyed into the ...

Himachal Pradesh - Parwano, Shimla and Manali

Hi Again, Well I am in Himachal Pradesh and have made some new friends and got rid of a bad driver too. The story with the driver was that he enjoyed his whisky alot and seemed to look hung over everyday. He wouldn't take me to the places that he should do and one evening he was drunk (surprise surprise!) and said that he was not given a drivers room and was sleeping in the cold in the car. Anyway I contacted the travel agency in Mumbai and hey presto I had a new driver who ...

Kalka to Shimla via the toy train

... was built by the British in 1903 to reach their summer capital of Shimla. The line is only 93km long but it snakes it's way through some 103 tunnels and through some breathtaking scenery. At one of the stations we stopped at, I got out and the driver came along the platform and seemed to indicate to me whether I wanted to come up on the foot plate with him. I declined his offer as I wanted to stretch my legs and get a coffee. I got chatting to some of the other ...

... here. One interesting thing here is that you can't just go an buy beef. In Mumbai there was no problem. It wasn't as available as in other countries, but it was there. Here in Chandigarh you can't buy it......unless you know how. A group of people know a muslim butcher who lives far outside Chandigarh who you can buy beef from. He puts it on a train and a la spy movie, people wait for this train to arrive at 5:30am and the beef gets ...
