... reached the city outskirts we went onto an expressway where the speed limit was set at 50 mph. Having left the expressway we started to climb into the foot hills of the Japanese Alps and the driver pulled the bus over to put snow chains onto the back wheels. ... moving onto Takayama, Veronica packed the suitcases while I took Charlotte and Angela for one last walk around Nagano, stopping at Baskin Robbins for ice creams before calling past the starbucks for coffees for Veronica and myself, before turning in for the night.

The day was still early, so we decided that to fill the rest of the day we'd head to Matsumoto. To do so we returned to Nagano on the shinkansen, and since we were back at home base, and we knew we'd be walking through the streets of Matsumoto, possibly after dark, we returned to the hotel to pick up some warmer clothes.

... around 45 degrees celcius, the cart service came around offering hot coffee, hot teas and hot soups. The girl was honestly stunned when the group of Aussie tourists down the back of the carriage ordered ice-creams.
Flustered, she obviously wasn't prepared for such a request, because apparently nobody orders ice-cream in winter. So with a disgruntled look on her face she left her cart where it was, mid-carriage, and wandered off towards the front of the train. She ...
