... really starting to notice it by the way we are ignored and disregarded when we speak and everything is directed to Ed instead. The art gallery was fascinating though. One of the sons showed us some of their work. His brother actually has one of his paintings in the Guinness Book of Records as the smallest painting in the world. In it there are 20 animals, 1220 leaves and 20 sea creatures. That is crazy considering how small it is, to the point where we needed to use ...

Bikaner, Rajasthan, India mikela... Centre. Chandra had recommended visiting here if we had time. Perhaps we would have got more out of the visit if we had paid for a guide but we resented paying more than three times what an Indian visitor would pay for the same guide. Also it wasn't made clear that there were no written explanations anywhere in any language so without a guide it was all a bit pointless. We did get to see some camels eating - something we've seen quite a lot of recently ...
Bikaner, Rajasthan, India tomandchrissy... all their scabby coats and stunted growth they did look, on the whole, very happy ratties and I spent ages trying to get good photos of them reclining on iron-patterned gates, flumped out in doorways or playing on staircases. I was rewarded by a very auspicious moment - one rat ran across my foot. Hugh was most put out and spent a while trying to put his feet in the way of running rats, but only got as close as one jumping over him. Some people have it...some people just don't... ;)
Bikaner, India hobnob... ty.html Bikaner is another city, smaller than Amritsar, but mad all the same. We had a truly magical evening here though, thanks to a misprint in the Lonely Planet! We ate a 5 star meal in the Laxmi Niwas Palace http://www.laxminiwaspalace.com/, in the most stunning surroundings - in the central courtyard of the palace itself, with superb musicians and a dancer who was breathtaking. She pulled out all the tricks for the tourists ...
Bikaner, India gengaontheroad... it was still pleasant scenery, with trees scattered among thorn bushes around which groups of gazelles and antelopes were playfully springing. There has been severe drought in this area for the past few years but this years monsoon has been more generous, with rainfall allowing the cultivation of millet. This staple crop, along with herds of goats and cows, forms the livelihood of the land labourers we met en-route ...

Bikaner, India reisenachinnen... with the music. Next was the shaving contest; who had the best patterns in their fur. Then the beauty contest- which camel had the best decorations. After, a milking contest; with a baby as bait, the adept trainer had to get as much milk as possible within a time limit. Later was the 'Mr. Bikaner' contest. Men dressed in classic Maharj garb, strutted fiercely across the stage, hoping to display their utmost stature, poise, and virility (exemplified especially by the length of a ...
