Thankfully despite having to go on the game drive we didn't have to get up too early today as the reserve was not too far away.
The Nakuru Game Reserve sits on the edge of Lake Nakuru and as well as having a good population of Rhino is famous of the pink Flamingos which inhabit the lake. There are no Elephants or Wildebeest here as Elephants eat too much and Wildebeest have no population control so as a whole would eat too much. Nakuru is a fairly small reserve at just ...
Today was another fairly early start as we had to go back through the border into Kenya as we headed for Lake Nakuru. Thankfully the border crossing went fairly smoothly although we did have to get out and queue up at the heath desk to show our yellow fever cards which apparently they hardly ever check.
We think we slept most of the way to Nakuru and James was quite hung-over as he stayed up late drinking with Quentin. We arrived early evening at Kembu campsite ...
... the train from Nairobi to Mombasa, but after waiting at the station we found out that there had been a goods train derailment on the only track heading East. The train was canceled, so disappointingly we had to get the overnight bus, which was rather scary where the road was bumpy; I was sure we were going to roll over as the suspension groaned and creaked! But we made it okay and even got some sleep. We were very fortunate to have been put in touch with some ...
Nakuru, Kenya willyblog... up to make me pay! As I was heading back into town I saw countless men and women out pounding the streets training for long distance running. I guess this is where the athletes that help Kenya dominate so many events are being trained! I was far too cold and sleepy for any of that nonsense though and didn't hang about before departing for Maralal.
Time to leave Nairobi, not that I actually made it into Nairobi but nevermind. Also time to say goodbye to Catherine who has finished her stint on the truck and is off to spend a few days down at Mumbasa before returning to Paris. Another person to love and leave us for a while is Jamie who is heading down the coast to check out some of the beaches and islands with Tara. They're due to meet back up with us on the 29th so ...
Nakuru, Kenya oliveramber... There was no water in it, only a dark patch of lava remains, and the surrounding nature was bland. In life, one has to enjoy as many things as possible. Be it speaking articulately, gently pressing down your finger as you are taking a special photograph or just eating. All of these simple things can be carried out with style and hence with pleasure. In town, we had lunch at an Ethiopian restaurant right across from the Merica Hotel. Although the building was well ...
Nakuru, Kenya muratcan... the kids and as volunteers needed to do their international hours. In an excessively imperative tone, we were told that the Blackberry was to stay. The officer felt that an explanation was not necessary. The lack of organization and the lack of professionalism is mind-blowing. Nobody seems to know anything and it is a grand puzzle to figure out who has the more reliable information, if any actually do. For instance, the Sponsor Letters Team kept asking ...
I was excited about heading to the Masai. We headed off from the lake for a 5 hour rough ride through masai tribal lands. Exhilarating.
We "free" camped over the last 2 nights. This means that we are out in the wild, with no stopgap between you and a lion's mouth or a trampling herd of elephants!
After another scrummy camp dinner, we sat around and met some of the local warriors. They spoke of their homeland and culture and ...
