Blessings!

Two cycle rickshaws loaded us up and brought us to our hotel, The Alpana. Aircon and a shower revived us after our train journey and we went out to explore. The hotel is in the middle of a bazaar and only 100 metres from the Ganges. Haridwar is one of the sort of gateways to the Himalayas and we have three nights here before travelling 30km north to Rishikesh, a town made famous by a visit from The Beatles in their hallucinogenic White Album phase but ...

Wow. I truly feel like I am on the other side of the globe. India is such an incredible and different place...it even smells different. Oh the smells. Cow ****, burning cow ****, Indian food, incense, flowers, garbage...all mixed together equals the smell of India. It's actually not as bad as it sounds... I'll start from the beginning: We had a lovely flight on Qatar Airlines (a fantastic airline if you are ever traveling though the Middle East) and we had a layover in Saudi Arabia. At ...

The Magical Mystery Tour: part 1

... by a priest. The atmosphere was noisy and excited (I was told twice, by two separate priests, not to look so worried) but it was also joyful, and respectful. As the man who runs the Ashram reminded us last night, this is a very religious country. In Haridwar that religion surfaces, and among the crowds, the merchants, the beggars, the rickshaws and the monkeys there is something unquestionably holy about Haridwar. Something I will have to come back to see again.

... way to backtrack over the region that we had spent 10 days driving and sightseeing through. We had sleeping berths with bunks for the whole family and managed to do some homework before we were lulled to sleep by the sound of the train as it rolled along past rural countryside full of wheat fields and intermittently passing by small villages, the backside of which left our hearts feeling heavy. The least fortunate and the bulk of the trash (Plastic is the ...

... swing and the remaining traffic still backed up. I would love to know if and how it was ever resolved. I had occasionally thought of capturing all of this on my handycam but being smack dab in the middle of the conflict and surrounded on all sides made me much too self-conscious to even try. I became too focused on what was happening around me and about my own survival that any journalistic sense I may have just didn't kick in and I think that will be the biggest ...

The magical world of Tantric yoga

... Me too. Classes started at 8.30am, with a two hour yoga work out, which was repeated from 4pm until 6pm and then a lecture from 6.30pm until questions ceased, usually around 9ish. This was often followed with some other activity such as an anahata meditation aimed at energising and activating the heart chakra. For this we all sat in a big circle amid candles and with anahata invigorating music playing. We would then project deep love to the ...

The only thing that was obviously different about her then others was her white skin. Like I said, I really don't understand it. We saw a cool light ceremony where candles were floated down the Ganga, but missed the best part. It was still interesting and relaxing. There are so many poor children and disfigured ...
