... lit up the whole sky, it was an awesome experience camping in the desert under the stars.

Next morning we were up for sunrise and had breakfast of eggs, toast and chai before packing up camp and setting off into the desert. Our bums were so sore from the day before so it was pretty painful getting back on the camels, the seats are on the camels spine so you really feel every movement and there are no stirrups so all the shock goes ...

The Desert, and a sore arse..

After an overnight train from Jaipur we arrived covered in dust to the small fort city of Jailsalmer.

This is a sand stone city, out on a limb in the Thar desert, or close to it (Geography not my strong point) We were staying in a lovely place if not a bit pricey for us in side the fort.

The fort looks like a giant sandcastle perched above the sprawling houses below, it has narrow cobbled, cow **** strewn streets and alleyways where its easy to get lost, as we ...

Death by driving!

We got up and had breakfast, which was again really good food, and then we went off to the co-operative textile house (a charity that uses its money to support the poor – allegedly!). We saw loads of throws, duvets, clothes and knick knacks. It is absolutely ridiculous how much money the designers make for stuff like this. We were told that the co-operative supplies companies like Armani and sells stuff to them for about ...

... The people approach the cart, give the old woman some coins, take a bundle of alfalfa and throw it to the cows. It is readily apparent that the cows are appreciative, the old woman is happy, and in return for feeding the cows, the people receive good luck on their journey......welcome to India. We pass the next 3 hours thru very hot and dry countryside. As we are driving deeper into the great Thar desert, the vegetation becomes more ...

... to a family friend of Kate's. We'll drop Kate and our bags at home, and then I will be driven the hair-raising miles of highway to Agra, on perhaps the least environmentally friendly outing of the trip - an eight hour round-trip journey to spend not more than two or three hours taking in the Taj. But if a woman was so beautiful as to inspire the insanity of building a structure so magnificent, it's the least I can do to go to this kind of insanity to see it.

... watched. Sure enough i turned around and my entire section of the carriage had come to watch what the crazy white man was doing. They were loving it! I may be sat on a TV show that millions of Indians will be unable to take their eyes off: Me performing my ebolutions. Later one of the ladies asked for my address so i wrote it down for her and she looked a bit confused. I said "So you can all come and visit?" and they looked a bit more confused. "Not as ...

... was the intensity of the stars. They were SO bright, and I wished that I had more knowledge about constellations. I will have to read up when I get home, but it won't be the same. I slept well except that it got really cold in the middle of the night in the desert, so the thick comforter that I had used as a mattress was then actually used as a comforter after that, for warmth. I woke with the sun and was offered morning chai ...

"True"-the restaurant and the Rat

So Im sitting here on the last night looking up at the fort which is brilliantly lit up thinking of last night.I had decided unwisely to go and have dinner at True a popular recomendation in Lonely Planet-never base your decisions on Lonely Planet. They are a good surface guide to a place but I would not recommend any where in it as they tend to be so overbooked and full of people carrying the Lonely Planet under their arm as if it was the ...

... our proper carriage. No problem, the train is still sitting at New Delhi station. Of course, as soon as this plan has been finalised the train pulls off from the platform and we are on our way to Jaisalmer - 22 hours West. Kush looks a little fearful and a new plan is formed - we will hop off at the next station and move two carriages back. There is a door block that's been set up to stop the riff-raff getting through to the luxury section so we can't just walk through the train ...

... fort here which was also built in 1156 by the Rajput ruler Jaisala. The fort was built on an 80 meter high hill but unlike the fort in Jodhpur, 25% of the old city's population resides within the fort walls. The fort is full of narrow streets carved from sandstone, it has a palace, temples and hundreds of Havelis. Haveli is the name for a Rajput mansion. After three days of exploring the city I decided to head south to the city of Udaipur. That's all for now, Glen.
