After another multi-vehicle trip involving a minibus, ferry, minibus, ferry, bus and finally another minibus we arrived in Ayvalik - a lovely harbour town backed by old Greek stone houses built into the steep hills.
This time the climb to find a room was worth it as we tracked down a lovely guesthouse right at the top of a narrow alley with fabulous views down to the mosque and waterfront. Many an hour was spent on the roof terrace over the ...

... executing all the adult males. Though the edit was voted down before any action was taken, the idea of Lesvos with only female inhabitants was born -- hence the term "lesbian".
This was a charming Greek island with a rich history. Lesvos was considered the very center of Greek culture and society. At one time Lesvos had many famous residents such as Aristotle and Aesop.
... across from Lesbos, the famed home of Sappho, from the Ancient Greek land of lesbians... Above the rock hued fishing village lies the ancient ruins, a beautiful conglomeration of structures spanning thousands of years of inhabitance... a temple to Athena, massive sarcophagi lining the necropolis to the edge of the city walls, building remnants lived in by Aristotle as he studied physics and biology before becoming Alexander the Great's tutor ...
Izmir, Turkish Aegean Coast, Turkey cotafamily4... steep and, in the town centre, covered by a network of ancient vine trellises. The overall effect is lovely. However one cannot ignore the fact that even basic foods are about 20% more expensive than elsewhere on the island. The harbour area (and most of the town) is mostly given over to tavernas and up-market arts, crafts and clothing shops. Nonetheless it is a splendid place to sit with a glass of ouzo, watching the world go by in their designer cheesecloth ...
Mithymna, Greece chickensafloat... key left in the door for visitors. One day we forced our little toy car up a steep rocky dirt track through a pine forest that took several hours to cover only a few kilometers stopping at several isolated churches. No one lived any where near by, so you have to wonder why they were built so far away. Perhaps they are on old foot paths between villages. Monasteries are also popular stops. Sometimes you drive down a dirt road into a river ...

Kuþadasý, Turkey gunnaringi... us how children find the coins after the rain falls heavily over Efes and children take them to sell, so of course now he wanted us to buy these. Just 5 million TL he said, 5 million, we declined thinking that they must be fakes and thank him very much. Interestingly in the corner of the basilica's grounds were some cactus growing, all around Selcuk are the hills and wide blue skies, it made me wonder where I was and you can forget that you are in fact in Turkey.
