Mammola day 2

A travel blog entry by sueesposito on Jun 17, 2014

... We had a siesta and then headed to the town. Don bought an espresso and I had a gelato ingliese and creme caramel. We sat with our new friend Nicodemo Agostinos. He had befriended us on FB. Don showed him photos of Australia. Off we walked to the Town hall or municipio. A man coming out of an office said we needed to come back tomorrow to get info on where Don's mum and dad lived in Mammola and where Don's maternal grandmother was buried ...

Mammola day 1

After a good sleep but on a very firm mattress we went to brekkie 8.30am. Antonio had a fruit pastry tart with coffee and I had tea. Again it was humorous to watch the idea of tea with milk being understood. That was our brekkie! Amazing. However after last nights meal we were so full anyway. We planned to head to the mountains in front of our accommodation after a walk around town to find Aunty Lisa's house. We followed our google map up very narrow, steep streets ...

... ready for a late night as the game started at 12. I slept and Don stayed up till 3am. He was reluctant to get moving in the morning. After a brekkie of fruit, chocolate croissant and cake we were on the road. To get out of Isola was a logistically nightmare! The GP s was correct but that road was cut off due to construction so we did 35 min circuit of town till we finally found our way. Our backs were sore as the beds in southern Italy tend to be very hard so we weren't in the ...

... 1 more toll of €5. We only took one wrong turn and had to go around a roundabout 2x before we headed up a dirt road to our Hotel Masseria L' Ovile. It was in an olive farm and so peaceful. Once I'd had a swim in the pool and a hot shower I was relaxed. Because we couldn't eat all our panini from lunch we ate it for tea that night. Brekkie the next morning was fruit, yoghurt, bread roll with cheese and boiled egg. I asked for black tea with milk. I ended ...

... in a bucket and Africans sell sunglasses, buckets and spades. We started the climb to the town through the winding street full of cars and scooters heading in the opposite direction. We ended up getting abit lost and nearly in someone's back yard. The town is known for its ceramics. Don wanted to buy large ones to take home which I couldn't see fitting into our luggage. Everyone hangs their washing out over their verandah and in the back streets there ...
