Our trip to Cusco started with an horrific night bus journey from Nazca. 14 hours around mountain bends on the worst seats we have had so far. Everyone descended into a claustrophobic frustration with bags and bodies sliding everywhere and the woman behind Wendy was vomitting for most of the journey. I resigned myself to not getting any sleep and, instead, threw my iPod on and shuffled through all my Built To Spill tunes followed by all my Blur tunes. Wendy took it a little worse, though, and...
Cusco, Peru conor-and-wendyNow we are several people traveling together, four Israeli guys (Alon, Shai, Benni and me) and two Belgium ladies (Mimi and Valerie). We took the train from Puno to Cusco, got us some funny hats and settled at Hostal Familiar. Cusco is a beautiful city, a mix of old Inca buildings, with Spanish ones, a big square and good food. We walked around enjoying the architecture, fascinated by the Inca craftsmanship and stone cutting, including the famous 12 corner stone. The lower part of the buildin...
Cusco, Peru laorfamilyArrived at 7am bleary eyed from staying awake all night at Lima airport. One hour flight highly preferable to 24 hour bus journey. And what a great flight it was, all over the Andes, even if at times it looked like we were only just over the Andes. Came in doing a hairpin turn around a mountain low over town. Fantastic way to arrive. But. Madness on arrival. Too many taxi touts trying to rip us off and book our hotel for us. No thanks, we can do it ourselves. The hard way. By walking away fro...
Cusco, Peru planetgeliMany emails were exchanged with various different directions and interpretations being sent back and forth but the two Collins brothers finally managed to meet in Cusco on Sunday the 16th of July at about mid day (ish). Shane, Stan's younger brother had set out for a visit to Brazil sometime around April and he has not made it back home yet and has no intention of going back till the money runs out! To the best of my knowledge, although I could be wrong, he has traveled to Brazil, Argentina, ...
Cusco, Peru snsgowest"Cooter, my alarm is going off. It is time we leave." "Seriously? 4:30 already." "Afraid so." "Do you think I have time for a shower?" "Absolutely not. We are still at the nightclub." "Good point. Let´s get the hell out of this town." The alarm was supposed to wake us up for our 6:00 flight to Lima. The plan was to have a couple of beers at the Real McCoy´s while we attempted to dominate Pub Trivia, then go have a couple drinks next door during happy hour before heading back to the hoste...
Cusco, Peru teammexico... the best I could say was slop! it was a nice curdled cheese, egg and potato mix with a portion of plain rice, I can tell that your taste buds are going crazy at the thought of it. I ate a small amount and decided that at the moment I had enough energy to complete the day, or at least until meal time without subjecting myself to it.

Lunch over, on with the trekking. We now had a steep climb up to Socma, a small (very small) isolated village high up in the mountains ...
Ollantaytambo, Sacred Valley, Peru jamjam... down the aisle. Then they had a fashion show with a couple people wearing clothes made from alpaca. I guess that's what you get for taking the more expensive train home (the backpacker trains were sold out). Took a cab back to Cusco and passed out!
The next morning we had to leave Cusco (tear) and fly back to Lima for our 12 hour layover. Lima was just as polluted and grey as we remembered it. Walked to Larcomar for coffee and ...
Ollantaytambo, Sacred Valley, Peru lmhbeatles... maybe a postcard picture will be enough. Back to Arequipa for one more night & out to a fancy restaurant for our first order of Alpaca, yum.
The next morning was another early start (thought this was a holiday!) for a flight to Cuzco, all went smoothly & had a full day of relaxing & wandering around this very nice but touristy Inca town before the start of journey to Machu Picchu. We had a respectable 8.30am start for the bus trip to ...
Cusco, Peru judymatson... next door came and was trying to pull us to his! We ate at two restauarants in town. The first one wasn't very good so I won't even describe it. At the second one we had a pizza since every single restauarant there is a pizzaria. It was actually pretty good! Their pizza is like New York Style - very thin. Very little sauce, and a lot of cheese. Like I said, not too bad. Oh did I mention how expensive everything is there? Actually compared to the U.S. it is still relatively cheap ...
