Lanzhou, Gansu, China junjunang... to the Base Camp – and there is
very little traffic so all we could hear was the wind as we passed
frozen streams and steep slopes. Exhausted, we slowly climb up a
hill decorated with the ever-present Tibetan prayer flags and take
our historic self-portrait in the howling wind. The base camp marker
unfortunately does not say Everest instead it uses the Tibetan word
name for the mountain: Mt. Qomolangma (try saying that 3 times!).

... it'll stay relatively clean until they get here. I was downtown tutoring a few days ago and told Mickey (my boss) about having to buy a train ticket to meet my parents in Beijing and he said I needed to go right away because they fill up so fast. Well, he was right. I was standing in a line with about 100 people and I needed to be back to teach so I started stressing. Just as I was about to forget about it and try ...
Shijiazhuang and Beijing, China trow814... then off we went into the bush. We had to stop a few times as we went through tiny villages to make sure we were going in the right direction. The scenery was fantastic most of the places we passed through you can only get to by foot or bike. But then there were these fantastic open valleys and scenes of moutains and farmers harvesting that should be on postcards. After about 3 hours we made it to 3 color ponds. It is on the map but I ...
HUANGYAO, Guangxi Zhuang, China bob8888... long time was sitting right next to me across the isle. He was around my age and every now and then I could see him wanting to join in the conversations. He even offered to swap his Chinese novel for my English novel without saying anything so I thought he was one of 'those' trying to get a laugh out of me for his friends. It wasn't until several hours later that he began speaking. One of the ladies ...
Xian, China eddakath... 4 days into our summer school she started complaining of pain in her mouth. Thank the lord i thought a little respite from her constant nagging, I don't mean it, I love the nagging. Anyway, this pain developed quite a bit to the stage whereby she couldn't even open her mouth enough to fit...... well you know what I'm thinking about and her mum's going to be reading this so I won't spell it out. By this point it was serious not only for her but for me too. Whining ...
Haizhou, China thebigh... I was a foreigner (actually, there was one, but he was a foreigner too). However, to see a foreigner in the middle of nowhere on a motorcycle is too interesting to ignore. We talked while I ate my sweet and sour pork ("Oh, all foreigners like that dish," the waitress said) and by talked I mean I spent most of the time listening and trying to decipher his thick accent, then nodding or answering in a couple of words ...
Lanzhou, Gansu, China throwerw... of these survivors will never be able to return to their towns. The anguish of the parents who have lost their only child is overwhelming, and the countless pictures we have seen and stories we have read make it all the more real. I hope we can preserve this feeling of connectedness once we get home and that we never see people from different countries as "others" again. It would be the best souvenir of the whole trip.
Yangtze River, China oneyearawayThursday 14 July- Urumqi - Turpan DP has a bit of a go at breakfast, and MP take a stopper pill. Traffic is jammed pretty solid outside, but manage to get a taxi OK. Misunderstanding about the taxi-meter, MP insisting, he use it, when he was going to use it anyway. Girl on the desk had written a funny 7 plus a squiggle, which was enough with DP reading out the name. Flag fall was only 6, but racked up to nearly 12 by the time we had gone the long way to avoid ...
