    Notes from the River

    June 2015

My new life on the river is in full swing now, and I'm beginning to feel like I’ve lived here forever, although it has only been 10 months. Spring has come and gone and summer is just arriving. The tourist season recently started and life is very busy. Working a couple of jobs and volunteering at the Humane Society, I am fostering a couple of cute kittens now thru their program. I’ve also been going out once a week to ...

... me to many locals, which has been a great added bonus. I was afraid that this tiny town might be a bit closed to newcomers, but they have been very kind and welcomed me with open arms. Lots of gatherings and parties, all within a very short distance. I am headed to a New Year’s Eve party tonight within walking distance, except that it is waaaay too cold to walk. I have started an herb garden, and discovered that the fruit flies love it, especially the mint. I found a nice little DIY fruit fly trap tho: a little red wine in a wide mouthed container, rubber band some saran wrap overt the top and poke some small holes. They are drawn to it but can’t get back out so they drown. Much like the snails & beer in the pie tin I suspect.

    ... cabinets up.

Later that day: Oh, well…. The cabinets are going to be a few days in the raising. I always forget to factor Dave’s perfection gene into the mix. Still, when they are all up, they look stunning!

The weather has been odd for July, chilly and gray mornings followed by warm afternoons followed by chilly gray evenings. We’ve even had some rain. It is usually hot up here in July, but I am happy it is ...

Thanksgiving in Monte Rio … 2013

Arrived Friday at 6:00 pm, had a power outage at 6:05 pm. It took us a few minutes to realize it, because it happened just as I tried to turn the lights on, so for a moment we thought it was something to do with our switch. Then we noticed the entire neighborhood was dark. (And it gets really dark here!) The stars were beautiful, but it made the arrival a bit stressful, especially since our emergency ...
