Venice began on land so undesirable that even the barbarians didn't want to invade it. That is why the Venetians settled here.

The Captain told us to be on deck for the views as we arrived in Venice, and it's too bad every passenger heard that. We couldn't get to the bow, but we hung out on the starboard side top deck as we passed through the lagoon. It's a beautiful city, and our small cruise ship towered over it.
