A quick stopover after Manila, we decided to travel North, quite far North in fact, to the historic town of Vigan. Back on the buses, for some strange and unfathomable reason the company decided it was a good idea to drop you in the city at 4am, in god knows where. Bleary eyed, thawing out from the baltic air conditioning on the red-eye express, we procured the services of a tricycle driver to take us to see guesthouses. It was early, they were none too pleased about being woken up and their ...
Vigan, Luzon, Philippines france_rejean... too hard. Still, only four hours after I left the Sunset German resort, I was 120 km away in Vigan. Vigan is a world heritage city. Unesco says so. The locals agree. They have put up plaques adorned with the Unesco crest and other heraldry on seemingly countless buildings. The slaughterhouse has one. Allow me to quote part of it. "Originally constructed in 1931, the Vigan Abattoir has supported over the years, the growth of the meat industry of Vigan and its neighbouring ...
Vigan, Philippines fatduck... was still room in there somewhere for some stunning mountains. How deceptive this one island proved! At least to me, who looked down on it, arranged in two inadequate dimensions, and presumed I could conquer it. The first bus ride out of Manila lasted through the night, and deposited me in the middle of nowhere in the dusky grey of pre-dawn, the only cold hour of the day. A second bus ride trundled further north, back into the heat and light. I woke ...
Vigan, Philippines philiadI think I'll never grow too old for road trips. I always loved them when I was a kid, when I was in high school and college, and still loving them now. The bickering, the inside jokes, the laughter, the singing out loud (badly), the pass-the-chips-to-the-back with the entire family. Planning a road trip for the family always stirs up great memories ...
Vigan, Philippines pvdyck... midnight. In particular, I thought so, when I saw the miserable neighborhood around the bus terminal. Fortunately, we caught a bus left for Vigan in a while.

After a 7 hours ride from Manila, we finally arrived in Vigan. We didn't know where we should get off the bus, so we chose a stop on a compartively busy street. I had heard that Vigan had the festival just on that day and had expected something special. However, it looked like an agiricultual festival, but didn't meet ...
